dougp26364 Posted May 22, 2004 #1 Share Posted May 22, 2004 How are the partially obstructed view cabins on deck 9 of MOS? It appears that the price of my cruise has gone down and I can upgrade my cabin for a Cat. H on deck 3 to a Cat. SO on deck 9. Since the cabin on deck nine is 157 sq. ft. rather than the 122 sq. ft. of the Cat. H, I'd like to have the additional room. I'll probably upgrade anyway but I am curious as to what exactly partially obstructs the view and how much. Florida Beach Posted May 22, 2004 #2 Share Posted May 22, 2004 According to one of the TAs, some of the obstructed rooms are 90% obstructed. That means the chance of looking out and see any view is next to zero. However, as she pointed out, you still have some sunlight instead of a pitch dark room inside Have a great trip March 28, 2004 - Mariner of the Seas July 4, 2004 - Sapphire Princess - Alaska
dougp26364 Posted May 22, 2004 Author #3 Share Posted May 22, 2004 There's a couple that are listed as totally obstructed but not that many. It's only a 3 night cruise so it's not like we'll be sitting around looking out the window on this cruise. I also can't imagine that the port hole windows of the Cat. H cabins would provide a terrific view either. The larger room is more of the selling point to me on this cabin. But it would be nice to know what to expect if anyone has had one of these rooms. dougp26364 Posted May 22, 2004 Author #4 Share Posted May 22, 2004 Well, I went ahead and upgraded my cabin assignment. We went from a Cat. H on deck 3 to 9032 on deck nine. A little more room, a little larger window and hopefully at least a little bit of a view. It will run me $20 total more than the room we had originally booked but we've stayed in an outside cabin on Legend OTS that was about the same size. We were comfortable in that cabin so I feel that we'll be comfortable in this one as well. Plus, we're closer to the Windjammer for our early morning tea and breakfast. Nothing like a price drop to help you get a bigger cabin. If anyone is still wondering if Cruisequick responds to price drops, they do it in a flash. I E-mailed them and had my new cabin assingment in less than 15 minutes. So far they've given me great service as well as great prices. dougp26364 Posted May 22, 2004 Author #5 Share Posted May 22, 2004 Surely there's someone out there who can give me an idea of what it is that obstructs the view of these rooms and how much obstruction there is? It's be nice if I could find it on RCI webs site but, if it's there, I can't seem to locate it. schpsych Posted May 22, 2004 #6 Share Posted May 22, 2004 The lifeboats obstruct the view. The larger cabin is worth the twenty bucks.
dougp26364 Posted May 22, 2004 Author #7 Share Posted May 22, 2004 That's what I thought. What's odd is I couldn't find anything on the RCI web site and most of the online TA sites don't mention that the cabins have any view obstruction. Even in the booking process on RCI's site doesn't mention it. The only online site that mentioned anything about obstruction was Travelocity. It seems odd that only one site lists these cabins as being partially obstructed but the others, including RCI's own site, doesn't mention it. At any rate, I'm sure we'll be happier with the new cabins location and size. Now I can go from obsessing about a small cabin on deck 3 to obsessing about an obstructed view. So much obsession over a 3 night cruise. You'd think I'd be more concerned with our 7 night or 12 night cruises we have planned. MimiD Posted May 23, 2004 #8 Share Posted May 23, 2004 Last year I had an obstructed view cabin on deck 8 (#8044) on the Monarch. The view was definitely obstructed -- we looked out smack into the side of an enormous lifeboat. But sunlight did come into the room, and we could see a little beneath the bottom on the boat -- we could, for example, tell when we were getting close to port because we could see land. By the time we booked it was a choice between this and an inside cabin -- and I think this was definitely much better!
tinkerme1 Posted May 23, 2004 #9 Share Posted May 23, 2004 Hello! We had room 9028 and 9024 for different cruises on the Monarch. Deck 9 cabins outside cabins are obstructed partially by lifeboats. Since they are only "port hole" cabins, you can see out to the water, just not down to the water. These cabins are probably the best value on the whole ship. The balcony cabins for a three and four night cruise are still small on deck 10 and way more expensive. For $20 extra, you've scored a great cabin! Enjoy the cruise. WendyinOC Posted May 23, 2004 #10 Share Posted May 23, 2004 tinkerme1 Do you have a picture of the room? Does it have a couch or seating area? I booked it for Oct. Not a lot of room but it should seat two people. At least that's what I'm expecting for a 157 sq. ft. room. Nesheim1 Posted June 27, 2008 #12 Share Posted June 27, 2008 like 9028 on the Sovereign? I have it booked for a cruise in 2009 thinking that all Sovereign class ships had the same layout.
critterchick Posted June 27, 2008 #13 Share Posted June 27, 2008 Only Sovereign has the balcony - from what I've read, RCI was experimenting with putting balconies on Deck 9 and that was the test case. As for the view obstruction, there's nothing directly in front of the windows on Deck 9 (and most of the Deck 9 cabins have full windows, not a porthole). The lifeboats come up to Deck 8, so when you look out the window you will see the orange cover, but you will also see the ocean beyond the cover. For $20 the upgrade is a no-brainer IMHO. You get a small angled couch and coffee table in the extra space, which is a nice touch. A picture is attached.
cruzr4vr Posted June 27, 2008 #14 Share Posted June 27, 2008 My DH and I have stayed in a standard outside cabin and in an SO cabins many times. The standard cabin (122 sq.feet) is so tiny one of us had to sit on the bed while the other one walked around the room. If the beds are configured as one queen size bed it is pushed up against the porthole. I had to climb over my husband to get out of bed.. The difference is size of cabin is definitely worth the extra $20 so what if you see the side of a life boat straight in front of you. We still have 3 more cruises booked on the Monarch, in SOs, before she heads to Florida - you could say we love the ship.
khank Posted June 27, 2008 #15 Share Posted June 27, 2008 We have cabin #9040 booked for our anniversary cruise on Dec. 19. Does anyone know about the obstruction for this cabin? Thanks for your help!
cb at sea Posted June 27, 2008 #16 Share Posted June 27, 2008 Unless you have a balcony, window views aren't much--I'd take a partially obstructed window with a larger room over a non-obstructed window with a tiny room ANY day!
