Complaints: What's Valid, What's Not?

I think it depends on how the sliver came to be in his foot.

If it occurred when the mirror shattered, sending fragments everywhere, well, then, sure, pay the guy for whatever the tweezers and alcohol pads cost.

if it occurred when dufus walked thru the glass on teh floor, sorry, nothing for you.

Luckily I'm not from such a litigious society - however, if I was on a cruise that cost squillions, and marketed as being worth squillions, and another pax was on the same cruise having purchased that cruise for significantly less (with the perception and belief they are on a discount budget cruise) then the pair of us would have extremely different expectations of the same cruise.

This may also contribute to what peoples expectations are - ie the unripe fruit in the buffet. If you've paid top dollar with the belief you are buying a top dollar experience, then you would be bitterly disappointed. You have also purchased something that wasn't as described, and would have an expectation of compensation / refund etc.

Whether it's legitimate or not, and whether it gets settled the way you expect are quite possibly two very different outcomes ! :)

This is an excellent point. Expectations are probably closely related to the cost. However, for someone who only cruises a few times, saves up for the cruise for years, and does not make enough money to travel often, the expectations might be higher for that $500 inside cabin than someone who is wealthy, cruises often, and pays $5000 for the largest balcony suite.

The fact is that people who want "compensation" for every mishap in their lives are those who believe society owes them a living.

They are always looking for the fast buck...and always looking for "someone" to blame for their misfortune...or' date=' in this case, a sliver in the foot being totally disabling and forever effecting his life and leaving such a trauma that he simply MUST sue---for he will be permanently disabled.[/quote']

And we wonder why Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security are bankrupt, and why our health care system is so expensive.

In this particular case, I think it would be fair for the cruise line to provide the passenger with a free visit to the onboard doctor for a check of the injury. He should also be given a supply of bandaids and a tube of neosporin.

It'd be nice for the ship to give him a bottle of wine or a couple free drinks as an apology for his injury. Or a voucher for a meal at one of the specialty restaurants.
