How Much Smoking?

Mysteryreader

Recommended Posts

I read PhilK's review of a Costa ship (referred to in a post on this board). He mentions that there was a *lot* of smoking everywhere on the ship. Perhaps it's just our circle of friends, but we see *very* little smoking these days compared to 10-20 yrs ago. Since we're non-smokers, this has just heightened our sensitivity to it.

We are booked on a Summit cruisetour, NB Alaska, 8/13. How much smoking can we reasonably expect to encounter?

On the Mercury I noticed very little smoking. X seems to enforce the no smoking areas.

One side of the ship is designated as smoking in the lounges (I, beleive the left side or port side)the other non-smoking. There was even an area in the casino that was non-smoking. There is no smoking in the dining rooms or the theatre. We have had no problem and we are non-smokers.

I believe Costa allows smoking on its venues because many Europeans travel their lines. Europeans smoke more than we do right now and it is really obvious. We just got off Summit and smoking was noticeably down from past cruises. X does enforce the no smoking rule and I've seen security ask people to please move if they're on the wrong side of the ship. I know many cruise lines allows more smoking on the European trips also.

We have noticed more smoking on our transatlantic cruises - Barcelona to Ft. Lauderdale - than on other Celebrity cruises. I think that has to do with the high concentration of Europeans on board.

The only place that smoke was noticable on our last 3 celeb cruises was in the casino. Otherwise, most smokers were outside on the promendade

Unfortunately, for both smokers and non-smokers alike, most rooms become quickly engulfed when even one person smokes.

It's unfortunate for smokers because they will still get grief in indoor areas where smoking is permitted, and unfortunate for non-smokers because they get choked out very quickly.

I am a smoker so I have a little different perspective. I do adhere to all of the regulations on board. I do wish however that the powers that be would move the ashtrays away from the elevators, particularly near the showroom(s) and the dining venues. The only time I am comfortable smoking there is when the halls are empty. I don't think that this policy is considerate or very well thought out. I know that no one wants smokers on the elevators but if they moved the ashtrays away from the most congested areas it would certainly make everyone happier.
It seems that there are fewer and fewer smokers on board and I do not think that you will find much of a problem. It only makes sense, however, that if you want to avoid the smokers in the public rooms keep to the right (starboard) side of the ship.

Costa's smoking policies are similar to other cruise lines. What you have to keep in mind is that Philk reviewed a Costa cruise in Europe. Europeans smoke much more than Americans and Costa caters mainly to a European clientele. As a result, the majority of the passengers on that cruise were likely to have been Europeans hence the increased amount of smoking on board. We have sailed on Costa a couple of times but they were cruises that sailed from Fort Lauderdale so while there were many Europeans, the majority of the passengers were American and there was no problem with smoking.

Very good points. We could not stand too close to the doors of the main dining room since that was where the ashtrays were and where everyone (i.e. the smokers) congregated before the meals. It was a bit frustrating since by moving 20 feet further down the hall, there would have been a real smoke free zone.

One other concern is when you climb the central stairs on the Century. It is a winding staircase and you can't help but end up in the smoking section. Just an observation (and why we never used the staircase)
