Hi Everyone,

We are leaving on a week long Windstar cruise from Barbados and have decided to arrive a day early (March 13th). We will be staying at the Silver Sands Resort and would like to take a tour of the island on Sunday morning before boarding the ship. My wife is an avid birdwatcher and I definetely want to tour the Rum distillery. Any suggestons on a good tour guide, anyone have a great time with a particular person or company?

Thanks everyone,

If you're staying in Silver Sands (keep your doors locked, it can be a dodgy area!)

you won't be so far away from the Chancery Lane wetlands

and the migratories it attracts

..although to be honest it's likely to be mudflats by now

becoz we've had zero meaningful rain here for the last 4-5 months

-it's parched-

so the waders ducks and other water birds are probably moved on elsewhere, if not back up North.

Another spot in Graeme Hall wetlands (that won't be dried out)

although the commercial part of it is closed -there is a 'wild' entrance along The Stream track,

but you'd better have your Wellington boots

(icky ankle-deep muddy, no place for a Princess!) :D -I simply do it barefoot, but I'm a local..

........................................

There are about 2 doz. local species resident (some will say more)

and if you need to consult with The Local Bird Expert, I have his name and number.

He's "connected by marriage" to me if not by DNA.

Early morning and evening, I have wild parrots screeching overhead of the trees, around my house

as they 'go to work' and come back home.

Don't ask where they work, I just know it's a daily migration thing they do

so I figure they have employment somewhere!! LOL!

There's two sp. of hummingbirds on the island.. :)

Barbados is not a real birdy island (too far out from the island chain).

You want Trinidad if you want birds!! ;)

but you'll probably see enough new stuff on this island, to be interesting.

Hi aplmac,

Do you have a Jimmy Buffet restaurant on Barbados, maybe your parrots work as extras there? We would think seeing wild parrots as the highlight of our trip, no such things up here in snowy Vermont. I actually have the wrong silver listed, we will be at the Silver Point Resort. Do you know of anyone who would drive us around the island for a few hours on Sunday the 14th so we could see the sights? Some of the most wonderful memories we have of traveling are when we hired local guides to show us what the tourists never see.

===> Still somewhere in the Silver Sands area..

Problem with your seeing the parrots is that their movements (in my area)

are either just about when your ship is docking -or a bit after your sailaway.
