Can you tell me about the upper beds or show pictures?

Our family has booked an inside cabin with 2 uppers on the Imagination. Our kids will be 4yrs and 6yrs.

Can someone describe the uppers for me?

Do they have an edge or lip to help prevent falling off? Are they easy to roll off of? How high up are they? Are they the size of a normal single bed? Do they have a normal mattress?

How do the kids get up to them - only with adult assistance?

Thanks.

We have two types of upper berths. One the older ship, the upper berth is attached to the wall of the cabin and folds dow. The newer ships have he upper berths that fold up into the cabin ceiling so you don't see them.

Yes, they are a normal size (single bed w/ a normal mattress. There is a side railing and a ladder that they place to climb up.

Very easy to get up and down. My 4 yr old had no problem. As far as how high up think bunk beds....not too high up.

Our kids started cruising with us when they were 3&5. They've always used the upper bunks and they've never had a problem :)and we have two very restless little sleepers. Upper bunks have a railing on it and it's impossible to roll out, you would have to climb over it to get out. They are the size of a normal twin bed and there's a ladder that hooks over the edge of the bed that is used to climb up into the bed. Our kids loved their little "hideout" in the upper bunk and the only real problem was them getting up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. I was worried they would be too drowsy and fall trying to get out of bed. So I set my alarm and escorted them to the bathroom in the middle of the night which helped me to sleep much better knowing things were taken care of. They will love the bunk beds, on our first cruise my kids kept going up and down the ladder having a blast decorating their little space up there. They even have their own little reading lights up there too. ;)

We have only cruised on Carnival, but the built in rail is very low. For our 3 year old twins we brought portable bed rails. They compress pretty small and fit in the bottom of the suitcase. For us it was worth the peace of mind (ours and theirs). Getting up and down the ladder was no problem. Keeping their little reading lights off at bedtime... that's another story! Have a fun cruise!

Yes, they have..; but anyway, should that happen, your kiddies would just fall in your bed ;)

That never happened to our daughter though... but to her teddy bear millions of times :p (and I played basket ball with it during the night as I did not want to get up ...!!)

We've cruised Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian, and Princess. On all of these cruises the upper bunks have had railings that were more than adequate to keep the little ones from falling out. That's why they are there, for your safety, and the cruiselines are gonna make sure they are high enough because they don't want injured passengers (both children & adults) and lawsuits. You can bring bed rails but it's a huge pain and a waste of time in my honest opinion. And this is coming from someone who is going on their 7th cruise soon, all with a family of four using bunk beds every time. ;)

Truth be told, I didn't allow my youngest up in one yet (she's 5 now). And she's still mad that my oldest always gets the "GOOD BED". But I just don't trust her up there. My oldest is now 10. She was 7 when I started to let her sleep "up top"

The way our room was configured, one of the kids would have fallen onto our bed, the other would have hit the ladder on the way down to the floor. For us the bedrail was a minor inconvenience, which I'm sure we'll do without as the kids get older.

Yes, I know what you mean. Where the couch is in my picture above, they have the double bed pushed underneath. So if the child falls off the top, they would just fall off onto the bed. I've see it configured like that so I know what you mean. :D

I am with cruisinmama on this one - my youngest is 5 (6 on our next cruise) and he really wants the top bunk. He wanted it last cruise and I still said no. There is almost no rail at the bottem so if they are true restless sleepers and work their way to the end....

The bunks are about eye level with me - so about 5" up in the air. Even if the bed was underneath it, I don't think I would want my 45 lb child falling on me in the middle of the night - some one could still get hurt.

On the other hand, the comforters that they give you are very fluffy. I would just put my kid on the floor wrapped up in that.

I believe the national organizing that deals with sleeping, bunk beds etc, does not recommend that children under 7 be allowed to sleep in bunk beds.
