Passports Going UP!

Perhaps one should look at the proposed cost of a US passport in the light of other current costs.

A new US passport that enables a US Citizen to travel worldwide or a renewal of a passport costs an individual between $ 110 - $135 and it is valid for 10 years. That amounts to $11 - $13 per year of validity.

That is less than the cost of 3 super Starbucks.

Hmmm. Maybe not a bad deal after all.

The proposed cost increase will give the ones who are fighting getting a passport yet another reason. It never ceases to amaze me why so many in this country fight getting a passport and then call their congressman to increase border security. I suppose they feel the two are not interrelated.

I agree it is the cheapest official ID around. I just wish my DL was so cheap.

I just got off the phone with the customer service agent at the National Passport Processing Center and he told me that the PROPOSED rate increases have NOT taken place yet! He said that the government is still considering the increases, and that the public will be notified, via news media, as to when the increases will take affect.

When asked when this increase may happen, he said he didn't know at this time. However, it would NOT be on March 9th (tomorrow) as rumored! I also asked if I could renew my passport now, even though it doesn't expire until October. He said YES!

That is correct, the initial post was misleading.

The increase in fees is only a proposal at this point and has not been adopted.

re:passport card

I can see the value in it,( at least a little)

if you live in one of the border states and make driving trips into either mexico or canada a short distance across the border ( say under 100 miles) on a regular basis the passport card makes sense. if thats all you ever do, other wise get the full blown passport

I live in Michigan and we use it all the time to travel to the casinos in Canada so they are good for that but that is all.
