DougYWG Posted March 8, 2010 #1 Share Posted March 8, 2010 For all you folks planning a cruise stop in Antigua, photos taken yesterday show that Dickenson Beach is no more. The sea has advanced 40 feet right up to Sandals' wall and there is no more beach. If you want to see for yourself: http://www.antiguaforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1830 It seems to be caused by ocean swell. Don't know if this is seasonal erosion and will retreat. It didn't happen last year.
Aplmac Posted March 8, 2010 #2 Share Posted March 8, 2010 Seasonal North swells, rolling Southward from N.Atlantic winter storms do such coastal damage to a greater or lesser degree, annually depending on the strength/severity of the swells being generated. Unfortunately 'North Swell Season' happens to coincide exactly with cruise season and much of the winter tourist season! We can expect them anytime between October and March. -every October to March (unless the N.Atlantic isn't doing it's thing...yeaahh right!) By August that beach will be back, or mostly back. The sand that was eroded is lying just offshore, probably no more than 50-100 yds. out there and will be re-deposited, per hi tide, as Summer comes along. It's temporary. Come back in four or five months and see. .
DougYWG Posted March 8, 2010 Author #3 Share Posted March 8, 2010 Thanks, aplmac. Learn something every day! Let's hope the sea does recede and put the beach back.
fishnfun Posted March 8, 2010 #4 Share Posted March 8, 2010 Were any other beaches affected? We will be there in 18 days. Thanks

debshomespun Posted March 19, 2010 #8 Share Posted March 19, 2010 We were just there in Nov. Wow! I didn't realize the ocean swells were this large, and for so long. We enjoyed our day along this beach. Hope it comes back for the sake of the businesses there.
jerseagal Posted March 28, 2010 #9 Share Posted March 28, 2010 I was enjoyed the beach the first week of December. As you walk down the beach past Sandels the water was lapping at the porch of the surf shop at the far end of the beach then.

InsidePassenger Posted April 15, 2010 #11 Share Posted April 15, 2010 This is shocking! We spent the day at Sandals the last time we were in Antigua. Will be back in a few weeks and were considering going again. Can scratch that off the list!!! I hope it is temporary and not like the beach erosion in parts of Cancun. KnJTexas Posted June 14, 2010 #12 Share Posted June 14, 2010 Wow I was on this beach last Sept 2009 we did not go to Sandles we took a tour that took us to the other end of this beach by Virgin airlines resort. It's a beauitful beach suger sands , calm waters, cute little sand crabs running around, pretty blue and clear water. We bought some kind of pie thing from a local vender I have no idea what all was it in but it was so good! it was a wonderful day at the beach and it sure did not look like these photos with high waters.
