Dining times and formal nights

I just realized something that I haven't read here, I don't think anyway. I selected the open dining time option on Carnival so we didn't have to rush to get to dinner early, nor can my kids wait until 8:00.

Would it work the same way for formal nights also? I'm only thinking of going to one formal night, but wondering if the formal dining is only open to those who have opted for the set times or if we would also get to participate and just wait for a table like the other nights.

Formal Night is for everyone regardless of whether you have a set traditional time or you are doing an anytime arrangement.
