checking in on the Caribbean Princess

We are leaving out of Brooklyn in July on the caribbean princess and was wondering, what time is the best time to get there to check in? Also, after checking in, what time do they allow you on the ship? And once they allow you on the ship can you go directly to your room? Once you get on the ship can you eat or should we eat before checking in?

Thanks!

Not sure what Princess suggests for your check in time, but your Princess personalizer should say the best times to avoid lines when checking in for your cruise. Princess allows you (on almost all cruises) to have access to your stateroom immediately when boarding. For us, we have never ran into a cruise where we weren't allowed access to our stateroom immediately. There will be a meal provided at the Buffet, but the dining room is open for about an hour and a half just after boarding begins. If you don't board in time to make it to the dining room, the buffet is open (in one way or another, and usually a full buffet on embarkation day) 24/7 on princess.

We have sailed out of Red Hook several times, check/boarding in starts between 11:30 and Noon.

Porters start taking luggage around 9:30 am.

You have several choices to eat once onboard. :D

Thank you very much for your responses.

Hopefully, the red hook section is an OK area?? Someone told us if

you make a wrong turn its gets pretty bad. Is that so?

If you are driving on the BQE from Queens (or La Guardia Airport), you will be mostly on the highway. As you get near the exit for the port the ship and the water will be on your right hand side. You cannot miss it. The trick is to go a little further up and then double back. You will find Police Officers there to direct you to the entrance to the port.

Print out driving instructions or use a GPS.

You'll be fine in the daytime, and there's a lot of traffic (really -- the 3,099 other people arriving for your cruise!) around, some of which will also undoubtedly be taking a wrong turn! That said, it's easy to see the ship from the BQE (the highway) and it's just a few turns once you take your exit -- the only tricky bit was the kind of U-turn you have to make on Hamilton (or was it Harrison? something with an "H") Street once you're off the expressway. Google Maps has a really excellent map of the area and you can zoom in close enough to see exactly where all the one-way merge lanes are, which can always be so confusing. Not to mention "Street View" which is awesome!

I'd get there early (11ish): you don't want to miss a thing on your first day! Have fun.

We are also on the CB in July. Our plan is to leave home around 10 AM to arrive around 11 AM.

It's been awhile since I've been on a ship early, and it makes the first day (and maybe even the cruise) seem just a bit longer.

Also, we have some important things to do the first day: sign-up for the UST and maybe even the Sanctuary and the Thermal Suite!

Never had a problem or felt threatened walking from downtown Brooklyn to the dock (40 mins) or to the shops near the dock. It is a lot more gentrified than it used to be.

Does anyne have any information on parking at the pier? Is it convient and does anyone know the cost?

Thanks

It's ridiculously convenient -- you can probably set your car alarm from your balcony, the lot is so close to the ship! I think it's about $18-$20 per day, but if you click here, it's the port's website, complete with directions and parking info:

Hi,

I usually don't reply to postings. But in this case, I feel that I must.

I am a native New Yorker, who used to live in Brooklyn but who now lives in Manhattan.

Red Hook is an industrial area around the pier, the homes and stores are a little further away. If you get lost driving there, the world will not crash down around you. It's pretty hard to get lost, we sailed from there last August and will sail again on May 9th.

The neighborhood is fine, I wonder where people get these ideas.

Just enjoy. There is no airport to go through.
