Naples - getting from ship to archaeological museum

Recommended Posts

Hello fellow cruisers,

We have scheduled a ship tour in Naples to go to Herculaneum which returns to the ship approx. 1 p.m. Our ship sails at 5 p.m. We want to go to the archaeological museum on our own from the ship as soon as we return from the morning tour.

Questions:

1. Do we have enough time if we walk?

2. If walking is not a good idea, will there be taxis that we could take to the museum? Are there taxis we can catch to get back to the ship from the museum?

3. Has anyone had any problems taking taxis in Naples?

Any information you can give us will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Shirley

The good news is that it's only about a mile and a quarter from the cruise ship port to the museum, and it's a pretty straight shot up a nice shopping street (Via Toledo). The bad news is that's it's mostly uphill. Of course, that means it's a nice walk back ...

There will be taxis at the port, and there is a taxi stand across the street from the main entrance of the museum, so it will be easy to get one going back as well.

Read the taxi information on the city web site here (http://www.comune.napoli.it/flex/cm/pages/ServeBLOB.php/L/EN/IDPagina/6665) and print out the pdf attachment to take with you.

We did the museum our last trip. We had a nice young taxi driver who took us there and then came back for us at a set time. Worked out well. We gave ourselves a little over 2 hrs and it was sufficient for us. There is a lot to see but to be honest - after a while it all becomes a blur...... one statue tends to look like the next and one frescoe resembles the one next to it...... but definately worth the visit.

The area of the gladiator helmets and weapons was fascinating tho..... each one unique.

Anyway, you can have the taxi driver meet you as we did - did not pay until the end. We also decided to get some pizza while there and he took us to a wonderful place and waited for us to eat.

Texancruzer, thanks for the information. I think we will try to find time to try the pizza, too. Shirley
