Assigning"Guaranteed" Rooms

At what point does a ship assign your room selection if you choose a guaranteed room? Sailing on Carnival Triumph May 15th with a balcony guaranteed. Sailed last May in Hawaii on NCL and it seems we were assigned our room quickly after purchasing.

It can be as late as the day you board.

Yep...depending on the line....we almost always book a "guarnatee". Sometimes we've not been assigned our cabin until check-in and sometimes when we did get a cabin assignment in advance, when we got to the pier and check-in, we've been moved.
