DH's co-worker pretty much said we are stupid for taking a cruise in September!!!

This made me really think about our cruise history. The only months we have ever cruised are February and September/October. So out of 25 cruises, half have been September/October.....west coast and east coast. We use February to get out of our weather and celebrate my B-Day and October to celebrate DH's B-Day and our anniversary.

I never worry about hurricanes the captains of these cruise ships are not going to endanger the ship or the passagers.....they will always find better seas even if you miss and/or change a port to do so!!!!! So in all our cruises we missed a private island once and one Mexican port.....that is it. Not to worry......go and enjoy!

Geez. When we first started cruising, labor day week was always the week we went cruising. I would say we have taken 15 cruises during the month of September. And a few more in October.

On one cruise, we missed our diving excursion in Tortola because the tropical storm hit the night before. The tour of the island was pretty unique after the storm On another cruise, we dove the morning after a tropical storm hit.

We had one trip that our ports were switched around. We had to re-book a few excursions that we had planned on our own. The cruise staff actually helped us send emails out (this was before internet cafes were so easy to use).

The seas were rougher than normal, but not scary by any means.

We actually were sailing through a tropical storm off the west coast one year. We didn't go to bed that night because the seas were so rough. The minute I laid down I felt awful. So we roamed the ship, played in the casino (kept falling off the chair!), watched the huge waves, and waited it out.

Ahhh, the memories of our cruises.

It took me almost a year to convince my DH to try a cruise. I booked earlier this month on the Freedom 6 night for September 19th of this year.

He was talking to a co-worker yesterday that is a frequent cruiser hoping for good information to make him feel better about going. Well when his co-worker asked when we were going, and DH replied September 19th, the co-worker started laughing.

Co-worker told my DH that we better have insurance because we wouldnt be going on the cruise, because everytime they tried going in August or September a Hurricane always cancelled their trip.

So now my DH is really NOT happy, and is questioning why in the world I would book a cruise during Hurricane Season. I tried explaining that Hurricane Season runs from June thru November. I am really questioning my decision now, about booking in September. :(

There is 8 of us going and NONE of us have cruised before, and I would hate to think that I just made a HUGE mistake, and potentially ruined everyones vacation.

Please dont flame me!! :o

All 8 of us did get insurance for the trip.

DH and I have cruised in September/October 3 times and never had a problem - look at my signature - we're cruising twice this September. It's just the luck of the draw - we figure that the worst that will happen is that we will leave a day late or stay out a day or two longer or miss a port - but we will still be cruising. Honestly, our December cruises have had much worse weather than our September/October cruises have. We cruised out of Mobile the day Ike hit Galveston - smoothest seas we've had.

Very few cruises are ever cancelled because of a hurricane, so even if the co-worker did have this happen to them their use of the word "everytime" is more than a bit misleading making it sound like it's an often occurance when in fact it is very rare. Now, cruises that have their itineraries changed or a port day turn into a sea day does happens more often during hurrriane season than other times of the year but even then the use of the word "most" would apply to the fact that "most" cruises scheduled duriing huricane season go off exactly as originally planned.

I always advise anyone thinking about booking during the end of August through October that that time frame is the most likely to have a hurricane that "could" effect their cruise. As long as they do understand that and understand that they "could" end up doing an entirely different itinerary than originally planned or end up with more sea days than planned or even through the cruiseline will do everything possible to avoid the bad weather could still experience a bit more rocky seas and they do understand and accept those facts then by all means book a cruise in that timeframe. And always purchase insurance no matter what time of year you travel. MOST sailings are never effected at all during hurricane season and because it is hurricane season there are some really good prices on cruises during that timeframe.

For the record, we've never had a hurrcane effect our fall sailings. :)

I live in Miami and just booked a cruise for September...my birthday is the PEAK of hurricane season...but I won't let that ruin my fun. The ship will go around any storm...and just because there might be a storm it could be no where near where you are going! To me September = lower prices and less kids. :D

We took a 15 day repositioning cruise, Miami/LA. Left a day late as a hurricane hit Miami on sailing day. Missed some Carib. ports avoiding another hurricane. Missed some Pacific ports avoiding a Pacific hurricane. Made it to LA, a great cruise. Got back to Fl. just in time for another hurricane to destroy our house. We lived 10 months in an 8 X 27 ft. camper trailer while the house was rebuilt.

So I'll see your car and raise you a house and 10 months of "camping!"

Whatta got?:D:D:p

you win.

There is one thing I haven't seen addressed is the worry.

If your cruise leaves on, say Saturday, and on Monday they spot a hurricane in the Caribbean, you'll be glued to the weather channel watching the "cone of probability" move all over the place.:( I prefer being excited that last week vs. worrying. But that's just me.

We live in Florida and I have cruised during hurricane season....once even in September. We even have one booked for October this year (24th). However, we will avoid August/September.

October is much more active, historically, than is August, especially in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico.

I cruise in September/October of every year and I have yet to miss a port let alone a cruise. I fear that your DH's 'experienced cruiser' friend isn't very well informed.

Insurance is an excellent idea regardless of season so you're good there.

If there should be a hurricane floating about your ship's Master will take you elsewhere keeping you out of harm's way.

DH's co-worker is an IDIOT for being so negative:rolleyes: Can you encounter bad weather, yes, but you can also encounter a host of other issues that may alter your plans.

I LOVE cruising in September/October and haven't once been in a storm, tho it can always happen. If DH is going to make your life miserable, then have him call the friends to re-book and then HE and his IDIOT co-worker can make plans for another trip.

Wow he is an idiot for telling his own experience:confused:

The same people here who will tell you dont worry, nothing every happened to me, will have NO SYMPATHY for you. If something does happen, they will say, well duh, you knew it was hurricane season. Didnt you get insurance to cover weather (not all insurance covers weather, even though Carnival's policy does now, it didnt then).

ROFLMAO!!!! Exactly!

Hurricanes don't cancel trips. Trips revolve around hurricanes.

The chances it will affect you are small. Go enjoy your vacation and ignore the sour puss.

The people here guaranteeing them smooth sailing are as bad as the dope the OP's husband works with. It's hurricane season. That doesn't

mean they'll run into problems or have the cruise cancelled. It also doesn't mean the possibility doesn't exist. Why not decide for yourself if it's worth it?

Why? when she can get the answers that she wants to hear on here:confused:

Not the end of October. Since we live in Punta Gorda, which was hit by Charlie in August (13th), I'm a bit leary of that month.;)

Again, it isn't what you say, it's how you say it. He didn't share his experinece to enlighten her DH, he mocked the (inexperienced) guy....not nice.

I am on the same cruise. So your husband's co-worker is pretty much calling me an idiot, too. I have cruised the last couple of septembers and have not had a problem. Will I someday? Possibly. Will I this year? Possibly. But I will go with the flow. I will be on the ship and they will take me somewhere.

Come join our roll call if you haven't yet. Get to know some of your fellow CCers.

149 days to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the reason being, its cheaper that way, the people we cruise with dont have children , so there isnt school schedules to worry about. and we never once had a problem. Its all in how you look at it. My DH had never cruised before and we went on one for our 10th anniversary,we got upgraded to a balcony(a must now) and he was like a different person, he just loved it!!!!!

best of luck and dont worry, just go and have a good time:D

Then maybe you missed this ...which leads me to believe it was a big deal to the OP.
