Can any body tell me the the public transportatation available from Hernesaari to Market Square and the ferries to Suomenlina and to the Rock Church.

The ferry to Suomenlinna starts from east end of Market Square.

Will the Samba parade on June 12 you mentioned in the Helsinki Day thread interfere with the 3T Tram or getting back to the ship from Market Square? Or would it be best to take Bus 14b back to the ship after 3:oo PM.

 

Are Senate Square and Market Square within close walking distance of each other?

 

On another thread a poster said that Suomenlinna was not very interesting for him. I thought Suomenlinna was a dont miss site in Helsinki. Is Suomenlinna worth the trip for a cruiser who will only be in the city for one day?

The parade might indeed be interfering with tram 3T so it might be good to know where to find bus 14B just in case.

Yes, just one block apart.

Thats extreamly hard to answer. Its up one's interests. Also, the fortress is definitely at its best when the weather is warm and sunny with no wind.

Is it possible to walk to the Market center or city center from the West terminal. If so how far is it and how long would it take? Coming in on the Norweigian Sun 6/12.

 

West Harbour (Hernesaari, quay LHC). Technically there is no problem walking as there are sidewalks all the way. Google Earth gave 0.95 miles through the harbour area plus another 0.95 miles through the recidential area to the city center or 1.25 miles to the market. The first half mile in the harbour look like this but from then on it will be better:

We are scheduled to dock at the Olympia pier. What bus should we be taking to get into town?

 

In a way you are in town already. Its only 0.6 miles to the Market Square but you could use tram 3T for most of the way if you want to.

I'm confused. Just checked and we are arriving in July at "Hernesaari" SOUTH HARBOR. I would think that's different than West Harbor above. What are the bus and directions to get to Market Square from here. Thank you for any advice.

The Hernesaari" - SOUTH HARBOR combination is impossible. Try to recheck. You might have missed the header "West harbour" in the middle of the list if you used this one:

I'll try to explain the harbours. Take a look at this map:

The west harbour is built on three fromer islands, Jätkäsaari (Ruffian's Island) on the west side and Munkkisaari (Monk's island) and

Hernesaari (Pea island) on the east side of the bay. The harbour on the west side of the bay (quays LMA, LMB, LV7)

is known as just "West harbour" while the harbour on the west side of the bay (quays LHB, LHC) is known as "West harbour - Hernesaari"

or just "Hernesaari".

 

Usually cruise ships will use "West harbour - Hernesaari" (LHB, LHC) and that one is supported by busses 14B and 16.

 

Regarding "West harbour" on the west side of the bay (LMA, LMB, LV7) it is mostly used for car ferries to Estonia (they will dock furter in the bay)

but sometimes, especially when there are many cruise ships arriving that part of the harbour will be used also for cruse ships. Bus 15A is running between

the car ferry terminal and the main railway station. Rebuilding is going on so I cannot give exact instuctions how to reach the ferry terminal from the

quays but you can see the ferry terminal on the map as a dark building just above the "L" in the text "LHB"

 

Then there is the South Harbour but only "smaller" ships (800 feet or less) can dock there. Again it is divided into two parts, the one called just

"South Harbour" or "South Harbour"- Makassini Terminal and the one called "South Harbour - Katajanokka"

Thank you Ultima Thule. You are absolutely right. Guess who gave me the "south harbor"?....none other than our cruise line information people. So, safe to say, cruisecritic has won again. I feel much better knowing the correct information now. Thanks for taking the time to explain also.

Well, its a bit of walking of course, especially from LHC but not difficult. There are sidewalks all the way.

 

Also note 1A is a morning/evening tram, there will be no tram between 9.14 am and 2.55 pm.

Another Question for Ultima Thule, if you don't mind. If we go from Hernesaari directly to Rock Church by bus 14B, which stop should we get off? I am aware there is a short walk from the bus stop to the church, but the name of the stop would help. Thanks in advance.

 

Also, would it make sense to get the Helsinki card if we planned to visit Rock church, back to market square/senate square and on to Suomenlinna all by public transport? Thanks.

The name of the stop is Kauppakorkeakoulut / Handelshögskolorna (meaning Schools of Economics).

I cannot see any real use for a Helsinki card. Just buy a one day public transport ticket for 6.80 Euro.

We are looking forward to going to Suomenlinna (and praying its a nice July day!). We are docking at West Harbour (Hernesaari), quay LHC.

If I understand the directions correctly we take Bus #16 to the Market Square and then walk to the east end to get the ferry.

 

Any other help about our adventure would be much appreciated!

The Voyager, according to the map, will dock at Katajanokka (ERA) on Aug. 30th. How far is the dock from Market Square? What is the best means of transportation to get there from this docking area? It looks like a long walk to me!
