Fuel Supplement Soon?

Here is a message to travel agents from 2 of Carnival's brands. Can Carnival and Princess be far behind?

Because of the continued rapid escalation of fuel prices, Cunard Line and P&O (UK) will introduce a fuel supplement of $3.85 (USD) per person per day. These brands will also implement this fuel supplement on third and fourth passengers.

The new fuel supplements will apply to all new bookings effective May 10, 2010 and will apply to all departures from November 1, 2010. The fuel supplements will not exceed $154.00 per person per voyage.

Do note they are only applying it to new bookings.

it's certainly possible if bookings are up (like Carnival suggests they are). $3.85 is pretty modest, though, compared to what they had a couple years ago. It would be so much less confusing to passengers if they just rose fares a little bit, though. It's obnoxious when you see a posted fare that is significantly lower than what you actually pay.

And the problem is what???? you will have to pay it ??? My question is why are so many worrying about it so much since they have known that it can be reimplemented at any time...

It was at one time $9 a day.

I think it's just a curiosity issue. People aren't allowed to ask questions on here? If you are of the group that does not care about fuel supplements, why did you click on this thread?

I posted it for info purposes, not to complain. Three things that I think are fair on the part of Cunard and P&O: 1) they are giving people notice and not implementing it for people who already book, 2) it is a small surcharge compared to the lurking surcharge that is on my Princess reservation, 3) it only applies to the 3rd and 4th guests in a cabin.

I don't think you can really get much more reasonable than that with respect to a fuel surcharge.

I also think the amount is not unreasonable considering we all booked our cruises with the caveat that fuel supplements could return.

You said if you are already booked but I read it that if you are cruising after Nov 1 you get it whether or not you booked early.

I will pay it, if I have to, and I wont give it any more thought. It is in the agreement you sign with the cruise line when you book your cruise, that they may implement it.

You are right I didnt look closely. Well, I still can't complaint too much, what are we $10-15 over the price they said they'd start to implement it, and it is much less than they reserved the right to charge.

Of course I care if they implement it.. then I add it to my budget.. but I don't constantly worry about it.

I can check and comment on any thread here thanks for your concern..

It is not just for the 3rd and 4th guests in the cabin. It is for the 1st and 2nd too. It just says it also applies to the 3rd and 4th guests in the cabin.

I totally agree the condition was already there in print so anyone complaining about it needs to reread their contract (oh sorry most don't read their contract :()

Again, not to nitpick, but you said the price at which Carnival said they would implement it .... they never said they will... it says they HAVE THE RIGHT to implement it, i.e. they can. "can" and "they will start to implement it" are different things.

I paid $10 a day per person on a RCL cruise.

btw OP Cunard is owned by Carnival, so anything is possible.

I know that's why I posted here, because I really can't imagine that they would not expand it out to their other brands (HAL, Carnival, Princess).

I do find it interesting that they started with their most expensive brand.

My contract with Princess is $9 per person per day if oil gets over $70. I think it was the same with Carnival. Oil is now around $82+ and they still haven't implemented it (tick tock). If they do the same price, it is better than what they can charge.

And Firefly: you are getting awfully nitpicky. Generally speaking, in my life anybody who says they "HAVE THE RIGHT TO" implement something, generally do. I am frankly surprised they have not yet.

This is on the front page on CC

So will U.S.-based cruise lines join the fuel fee brigade? As they've done for some time, spokespeople from Carnival, Royal Caribbean and NCL all confirmed that their lines don't have any plans to re-adopt surcharge policies at this time. All three, however, reserve the right to do so if certain preconditions are met.

I said it was nitpicky, but Im a optimist I guess, and hoping they don't add it to my already booked cruises. It would affect my booking, I wouldnt book as many cruises if they do it.

Same here. If they to what they reserved the right to, that will be a good chunk of change on your account just for stepping on the ship. For me personally, it probably would mean a shore excursion booked through a third party instead of Princess, less money gambled in the casino, no alternative restaurant. I will not increase my vacation budget by $18/day for two of us.

If they don't....great.

If they do....I will still cruise. "Just the cost of doing business....." :)

Agreed. Carnival has already raised fares for this summer and as long as fuel cost does not spiral up out of control, I don't see any supplement.

Close to a buck a litre right now:(

In Nova Scotia we are at 1.08 per litre (this week) for regular unleaded, self serve! Still better than it was in 2008 when we cruised last time, gas was at 1.45/litre then, and we paid the $9.00/day fuel supplement that was in place then, and Still had fun on the cruise:D despite the surcharge:rolleyes:

That's $15.40/day for a family of four (whether or not they're in the same room). $107.80 total for a seven-day cruise.

Ppl might wanna start budgeting for fuel fees. Then, if one isn't given, hey, look - extra money for the current or next cruise! :)
