Santorini - Volcano

We are going on a cruise starting June 5, 2010 and one of the stops is Santorini. We always like to DIY planning and rather not take the cruise excursions. So...in Santorini we were thinking of going to see the volcano. is it nice? Do you need a guide or can you jump on the ferry and do it on your own? It would be great to hear some suggestions.

You will be mooring directly over it or shall I say in it. The whole island is a caldera with the center of the volcano out in the water.

Just make sure you keep to the law by wearing a helmet, altho' you may see locals without- it's the law! And keep covered- there's lots of stories of people being in accidents, and having severe skin grazes because they were wearing shorts.

My friends ride a quad bike for 2 when we stay on the island.....they're younger than us- we stick to a car.
