All Things Splendor

Recommended Posts

I've been reading on other threads about Past Guest parties and Captain's parties. What's the difference between the two and where are they held on the Splendor? Do you like to attend the parties on the Splendor?

Also, has anyone here been on the Splendor with John Heald as CD? If so, how was it? Thanks!!

I dont know where to start with our favorite places on Splendor...lets see...the cigar bar, the aft hot tub, the gym....the sushi bar, the indian place....and the bar next to the piano bar (I wish I could remember its name).

Hate the Splendor myself.. will never sail her again.. been there done it.. it was a glorified version of the Spirit class had they left the aft area for smokers (one side only like the Legend).. instead of throwing us up on deck 10.. I would consider it.. not happy with the NO smoking casino bar on her either... so many may LOVE it for it!!!;)

Yes, this was a big negative for myself also.:(

On all SPIRIT class ships (up to the time I was on the SPLENDOR) the aft Lido deck open to the sea always allowed smoking on the starboard side. Much to my surprise on the SPLENDOR there was NO SMOKING allowed on any part of the Lido Deck (must go to deck 10 just above the Lido deck)

I enjoyed the fact that the SPLENDOR was laid out much like the SPIRIT class with the open aft bar, adult pool, jacuzzi setup with a 270 degree view open to the sea. (but still had that stupid MDR arrangement, and combination of bars all in one area like the CONQUEST class) I didn't like the thinking that the SPLENDOR moving forward at 20 knots somehow wouldn't allow any smoke off the aft of the ship to move away QUICKLY.

I was amazed also at the NO SMOKING casino bar, although any time I spent in the casino was at the Hold'em poker table, which was also NON-SMOKING.

I'm either going to have to limit cruising to SPIRIT-classed ships, bite the bullet and move up to deck 10, or quit smoking (no proselytizing please).

Another question from a new Carnival cruiser...

I was reading through other CC threads about checking in earlier then Carnival suggests. I noticed most rooms are not usually ready until after 2:00pm. If that is the case and you check in early, what do you all do with your carry on? With Princess our cabin has always been ready no matter when we check in, so we've never dealt with this dilemma. I would hate to drag around our carry on while we explore the ship. What has been your experience with this?

that's a good question, and one I have been wondering about too. We will be arriving on the day we board the ship.. but will be there about 3.5 hours early.

Just booked myself, wife, & 2 kids (age 6) on the Splendor. Our sailing date is 1/2/11. I'm very excited. We've NEVER been on a Carnival cruise before and we've NEVER taken our kids with us. This will be our first cruise in over 7 yrs! We've been on RCCL, NCL, Celebrity, & Princess. With RCCL being our favorite, followed by Princess & NCL. We liked Celebrity least. We've sailed this Mexican Riviera itinerary 3 times previously. Any other families on board with small kids?

Unfortunately you are going to have to tote around whatever you decide to carry on. I will only be carrying on my laptop and a small bag/ backpack from now on. Our first cruise ( on the splendor) we had three 12 packs of pop in out rolling carryon along with emergency clothes and cameras as well as my laptop and a tote with all of our "papers" and my purse. It wasn't hard to tote around, but we really would have browsed more.

Most of the people say they simply get onboard, fond a table on lido to "park" their stuff, them someone stays with the stuff while the others get food/ drink, then swap. They just relax on lido until 2, drop their stuff then browse until sail away. It really isn't that bad. I think we were only onboard an hour before the rooms were ready. Enough time for lunch and a drink while relaxing and looking out at the scenery

Gary, do you have to be on a certain side of deck 10 to smoke? Thanks!

Yes, the Starboard (right) side. But, I repeat, no smoking whatsoever on the Lido deck (even the aft Lido open to the sea )
I emailed Carnival about this and they replied that it was for the comfort of all their guests. I wrote back that no it was for the comfort of their nonsmoking guests. I do not see why one side of the aft adult pool can not be smoking. The wind is blowing and i have never seen a smoke haze over the aft deck. I am waiting to see if they reply. I am going to be on the Splendor next month but really wish I had booked the Mariner because of this.

I've cruised 3 of the 4 SPIRIT classed ships which have an identical layout of the AFT Lido deck of the SPLENDOR and smoking was always allowed there. It dissipates instantly behind the ship as well as being on only one side (Starboard) of that deck as well. Its got to be a purely political decision, not based on any physical/mechanical issue of where the smoke actually goes. Carnival's decision is disappointing to me.

Also looking at the Mariner before she leaves the west coast.:)

They were pretty lax about smoking on deck 10 at night after the crowd mostly died out. There are some great spots up there. You could pretty much smoke anywhere up there. Not a big deal to walk up a few steps from the aft pool, and a great view.

Someone asked about movies. I just got off on Sunday. We had: Avatar, Blindside, Up in the Air (censored!), Night at the Museum 2, and Princess and the Frog on the big screen on Lido. They showed The Informant, and Sherlock Holmes in Spectacular. I think that's it. They also had concerts; Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, the Beach Boys, Miles Davis, Celine Dion, maybe one or two more.

Oh yeah and John Heald is an AWESOME CD! Not cheesy, very genuine, funny, etc. Leave him a note at Guest Services about something special happening, and he'll send you a little note, a bottle of champagne, and a ship on a stick. Also, on his blog, he's happy to help you with special requests for the dining room (table for two, chef's table, etc) I hear they're starting the chef's table very soon on Splendor! I wish I could have waited for that.

Just be careful in Mazatlan. Seems that someone gets their rented jeep stuck in the sand and misses the boat just about every cruise.

I had inquired as we are on the ship on 9-26-10. Thanks for taking the time to answer.

Does anyone know if you are able to plug an iPhone/iPod touch into the TV's? Wondering if we can forgo bringing a DVD player and just play my son's shows on the TV using the Apple AV adapter.

We were in an OS cabin on deck 7 last week (9/5 sailing) and there were hookups for an RCA cable and a regular mic/input jack (middle sized) in a little cubby adjacent to the monitor. DD was in a 1A and she didn't have those hookups, so I'm thinking its only available in the suites.

Have you started packing? I'm looking forward to your review. I can't remember, did you say it would be live? I wish I was leaving on Splendor in a week. Have a great cruise!!!!

Yes it will be live in our picture cruise journals which I am not allowed to link to here but, if you email me at ritasusan@aol.com, I can send you a link.

(I had the link in my signature but they said it wasn't allowed)
