Who's back from Alaska on the Star?

Recommended Posts

I too had been looking for just some more comments on the Star, but I will of course formulate my own opinion after I set sail this weekend. (On the sailing with Terry). He has just provided a wonderful amount of info, guidance, etc. Glad to have him on the sailing I will be on.

We did manage to get an upsell yesterday to an AC suite from our balcony, so I think that for me anyway takes away any pain we may have felt from Spinnakers being moved. I think the view from my forward facing balcony should be fantastic.

I hope you have a great cruise. And please, don't forget to come back and report! Thanks

We just got back from the Star!!!! May 22 sailing!!! It was awesome.. this was our first cruise to Alaska... Yes we did go to Tracy Arm, beautiful!!! The weather was fabulous!!!!! In Juneau, the tour guide wanted us to stay cause the weather was the best it had been in three weeks... Ketchikan a little chilly and then it warmed up... so layering IS the key!!! We rented a car in Skagway and drove to Canada... That was amazing!!!!! the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen... matter of fact when we got back to Seattle Sat.. it was colder there than in Alaska!!! We had a minisuite and my hubby stayed on the balcony and with bincoulars saw everything!!!! We saw bears on our way to Canada!!! Amazing is all I can say... I did save some of the dailies.. right now not sure where they are.. The "Oh What a night" show.. Frankie Vallie Tribute was excellent!!! Chocolate Buffet was beautiful!!!! Service was great...the only beef I had with NCL, is that I had an OBC and it was not posted til Wed...after going to the desk 4 times and finally got the correct person to help me and with the proof that I had she faxed it to Miami and it was posted ASAP!! Other than that it was an AWESOME TRIP!!!! Will answer questions if I can... Would cruise NCL again!!! Alaska ANYTIME!!!!!

MSgirl, thanks for not forgetting to come back and report on this board. But hey, you are from MS, so we do keep our word don't we? I am so glad to hear you made it up Tracy Arm. It is beautiful isn't it? I have cruised Glacier Bay and Tracy Arm, and Tracy Arm is my favorite. Did you cruise east of Vancouver Island? I think I have seen that the ship did. What part of MS are your from?

Did you take a shore excursion up Tracy Arm, or did the ship tour that way? We leave Thursday from Kentucky, making our way to Seattle to sail next Saturday. Really excited!!! Still have a few questions....... Is it too late to rent a car in Skagway? Did you drive the highway that parallels the train route? So glad you had a wonderful time.

Hey MSGirl, it wasn't just your OBC missing it was for everyone. They even showed that Saturday when I boarded that I had the $950 OBC but they didn't post it to be used until Tuesday morning. It was very annoying because everytime I tried to use my card they denied it, which was very embarassing. So I can say at least I spent much less on board as I didn't really try to use it much after that.

Trip itself was wonderful, most all staff members were great, however I found the worst staff members at guest services. They weren't very helpful and very argumentative. I had never quite encountered that type of service before. For instance when we inquired why we had not gotten our airline info and tags for signing up for the bags program, my mother was told - you didn't turn in the form. My mom told the lady - yes we had turned in two forms for the three of us since we had two different airline confirmation numbers, again girl said no you didn't. Finally the girl went and looked at something somewhere else and came back with oh yeah you did turn it in but we haven't done it yet.

Shows and entertainment we found to be lacking, can't say I thought Candi was the best cruise director I have seen. We played trivia three times, went to the murder mystery dinner, played on the Wii, missed the drink tastings, played bingo once (way too expensive), spent a very small amount of time in the casino.

Ate at Cagneys for breakfast, tried the Blue Lagoon one evening for takeout. I have to say the one time I tried to use the butler for room service (one afternoon) he seemed to be very annoyed, so I never really tried to use him much after that. We did order room service for breakfast one morning. Alternated between Versailles and Aqua for dinner, also tried the Asian Fusion (very disappointing) and the Tex Mex (one of my best meals).

Primetimegirl,, We live in Brandon!!! I have looked for the dailies and I found only Sundays and Thursday, my sister went with us and she lives in ********* and she must have the others, plus my Alaska scrapbooking stickers I bought!!!!... We got desperate for packing room and putting things in each others bags!!! LOL!!!Yes, we did cruise east of Vancouver Island... In Tracy Arm we were on the ship but had friends that did the excursion and said it was wonderful, but she was surprised that the ship got as close as it did... They were not very far ahead of us.. but she said it was still worth it... I am on FB and have posted some of my pics on there if you are on there I am : India Jones Jackson, MS or contact me by email.... impactimaging137@hotmail.com and I will scan in the two dailies I have and send them to you... let me know what part...

The cruise director was Candy... she was ok...

We went to the "Oh what a night" show and also the Band on the Run show.... much enjoyed 'Oh what a night" the Band on the run was pretty good..

For ports: Ketchikan--- city blue line bus 2.00 to ride all day. went to Totem Bight Park (I love Native art) and riding with the locals we talked to them and enjoyed that very much , then came back and shopped bought at Crazy Wolf Studio... local artist...

Juneau---- We caught the white school bus with Juneau Tours ( we went to one of the booths 7.00 Mendhall Glacier oneway) so for 14.00 we went to Glacier and the bus driver was an excellant tour guide, he talked to us alll the way up and back (we ended up with the same guy coming and going) gave us history, pointed out things to us and comedy ..he was great. .. We like doing local cause I would rather give my money to locals..Skagway rented the car.... if you are interested in that go to Avis.com and see if you can reserved one... all of their cars are one year old or less... We had an Impala....131.00 to rent and only 24.00 in gas when we got back to fill up...went to Red Onion when we got back..

Prince Rupert----walked around took pics of their Totems....

Food.... ate in MDR two nights --- Salmon, Flounder reason we went..

Ate breakfast at buffet cause it was quick and easy...Endless summer two nights cause I loved the lobster tacos... Ronny and Sue -- chicken faquitas... you gets lots of food... more than we could eat... Had room service on night cause we were tired and had burgers they were ok..

We had sushi one night.. we loved it... Never tried the Italian, but wanted too... On the buffet... seemed to be same food just cooked a differant way... got tired of it... I did like the pasta that they cooked for you and you select the sauce and ingredients... The day they had salmon, it was very good.. too... If we ate a big breakfast and then we only ate one other meal..... I have only cruised on Carnival and Sue and I both thought their buffet was better...

Cant think of anything else...

Like I said either email me or FB me and I will do whatever I can...

Sorry this is so long.... tried to cover as much as i could..

India, Ronny and Sue

SisterSunshine, go to Avis.com and see if you can reserve one... We got to the office at 7;30 and was first in line... Their cars are one year or less old... I also downloaded Murrays guide and took with us.it is 5.00 to do so.. that was great!! Yes, it is the only highway out of Skagway to the Yukon, remember to take your passports... That was the absolute highlight of our trip.. I know you will have an awesome trip... It is alll about the scenery... Ronny stayed on the balcony with binoculars 99% of time.. other he was off ship, eating or sleeping... Sleeping,, we did not seem to do a lot of that cause we were scared we would miss something... !!!!

MSgirl cruiser, You did great! I see the attached thumbnails, I just gotta find out how to get them big enough to see. I can click on them and they do enlarge, but not very big. I can print them, but they are not big enough to see. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
