We're on HAL and my question is the "Fortress of the Bears & Sea Otter Quest" - is this excursion really worth $165.00 each and why or why not? Thanks for the help. Should we be doing something else?

The Sea Otter and Wildlife Quest alone is $119 pp. We did it in 2006 and will likely do it again this summer. If you do the morning trip, they pick you up right from the boat, thus eliminating tendering. When it's over they drop you at the dock. We saw lots of wildlife.

 

I have no idea how much Fortress of the Bears charges as I can't seem to find that info on their web site. In any case, you can do the math. If they charge $165 for both and you know you can do the boat trip alone for $119, is it worth it to you to spend another $46 to go see a couple of young bears in what is basically a zoo exhibit?

yeah, I read that ... but didn't want to jump to any conclusions about it since I've never seen the place other than on the internet. ;)

While the fortress is indeed a large concrete circle, the proceeds of your tour go to pay for their care and for the care of other abandoned or problematic bears who might otherwise be shot for getting into local trash cans. I also enjoyed the scenic drive to the fortress and the lakeside views. I thin it's worth a quick visit.

It sounds as if we should skip the Fortress and simply go the the Otter Quest. Any thoughts?
