We would like to travel by land from the airport in Santigo to Buenos Aires if possible. Has anyone done this journey. How many bus changes. We would like to spend a couple of days in the wine country. Is this posssible? Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks

I crossed from Valparaiso to Mendoza by bus and it is a great 7 hour ride, however crossing the Andes foothills in winter by bus is hit or miss. It is not advisable. Weather will frequently delay the bus for a long time so allow for that. And save that little piece of paper you receive from Immigration when you enter Chile. You are required to return it upon exit at the border. If you don't have it you may be required to turn around and go back to Santiago to get one.

This fall I intend to tour more of NW Argentina esp Salta. I understand it is absolutely beautiful.

You have to get from the airport to the South bus station in Santiago-public transport available, although I think taxi is easier. Then make sure you take the DAY journey to Mendoza-the scenery is spectacular. And in the winter, the pass can be closed, so time your trip appropriately.

One bus to Mendoza, one overnight bus to BA. Andesmar, TurBus, Flechabus (a luxury bus company), etc., etc. all service this route. Book at least cama class, although executive cama or cama suite is almost as good as flying first class international long haul in an airplane. Make sure you book the class with food provided or you will have to take your own. They have full meals, wine, drinks, etc. in executive class. Price is generally less than $100pp US one way. Book in advance if at all possible. Otherwise, you may be spending more time in Mendoza than you planned waiting for an open spot in executive class on the bus. It is a very popular route.

The Andesmar website has an English translation. Most of the other bus companies' websites are in Spanish. You can also book tickets through Omnilineas AFTER you email them.

Enjoy!!!
