Marina di Carrara

Hi heading to Marina di Carrara and can't find too much about the port itself - can you just explore it on foot or is it only a jumping off point for excursions to Pisa and Florence? Any help much appreciated.

You must be traveling on a very small ship as the marina area is not large at all! I had no idea cruise ships even stopped there. The best bet IMO would be a trip to Cinque Terre--very close and really wonderful. Of course you could do Florence and Pisa but that would be considerably farther. I have never stopped at the port/marina, although I have been through there several times, but I can't imagine there would be much to see or do. . .

Here's the web site for the port, in English: http://www.autoritaportualecarrara.it/inglese/home.asp

Cinque Terre would be the closest place to visit from Carrara; Florence is really too far to do on your own, at least by train - it's about two hours each way.

Pisa is reasonable, at about an hour by train, or Lucca, also about an hour by train.
