martyap Posted June 9, 2010 #1 Share Posted June 9, 2010 Is a non-activated, store gift card sufficient to use in the room safe? Thanks
firefly333 Posted June 9, 2010 #2 Share Posted June 9, 2010 Depends on the ship. Some have number keypads and some you swipe a card. It works for the later type.
cherbear4000 Posted June 9, 2010 #3 Share Posted June 9, 2010 Does anyone know if the Freedom is keypad or the kind you swipe?
Rare dna1990 Posted June 9, 2010 #4 Share Posted June 9, 2010 Take a gift card anyway...have another card of some some, and if turns out to be keypad - great. No biggie.
allener58 Posted June 9, 2010 #5 Share Posted June 9, 2010 Is a non-activated, store gift card sufficient to use in the room safe? Thanks Yes, the card does not have to be activated, just has to have a metalic strip on back. Expired cards work also.

janabm81 Posted June 10, 2010 #7 Share Posted June 10, 2010 I know this is silly but do you have to use an old card because it does something to it like deactivates it or is that just most peoples personal preferance?
NS-Cruiser Posted June 10, 2010 #8 Share Posted June 10, 2010 Does anyone know if the Freedom is keypad or the kind you swipe? On the Freedom in Nov / Dec 2008 it was swipe type, probably still is:D
sylteach Posted June 10, 2010 #9 Share Posted June 10, 2010 We used a Wal-mart gift card that had not been activated. We used one that was all silver mylar, so it was easy to identify as our safe "key." I understand that the Freedom safes use the magnetized cards. DocF Posted June 10, 2010 #10 Share Posted June 10, 2010 I have used my credit cards or my debit card without ill effect. Somewhere up the cyber-network there is some point at which someone bent on stealing your number could do so from this practice, but it is so unlikely that it is not something I would even consider. I do carry an old card to use as a safe card, though. Doc
cuyahoga11 Posted June 10, 2010 #11 Share Posted June 10, 2010 I use land casino cards, that way everyone in the cabin with me can have a card since they have a same magnetic strip. No lookin for cabin mate to open safe.
Julycruise09 Posted June 10, 2010 #12 Share Posted June 10, 2010 Freedom in Nov 2009 had the swipe feature on the safe. I have used past hotel keys, starbucks gift cards etc. Don't like using anything with personal info on it.
Biffer1997 Posted June 10, 2010 #13 Share Posted June 10, 2010 I use land casino cards, that way everyone in the cabin with me can have a card since they have a same magnetic strip. No lookin for cabin mate to open safe. I was going to ask if land casino player's cards worked, but you answered that. How are you able to use mutiple cards? I have a few cards but not sure if they are from the same casino. Probably could round up a couple of the same ones....
johnjen Posted June 10, 2010 #14 Share Posted June 10, 2010 Just thought I'd ask, but do the room stewards know of a standard code to get into those safes?
Colorado Kat Posted June 10, 2010 #15 Share Posted June 10, 2010 Freedom is the swipe type. I've always used expired gift cards, so no danger of messing up info I still might need.
