Does Dealer Have To Hit Or Stay on 17?

Recommended Posts

Does the dealer have to stay or hit on a soft 17 at the BJ tables on Carnival ships? The Ocean Players Club website says they must stand on all 17s but some have posted that they hit on a soft 17. Has anyone played recently on the ship (I'll be on the Dream next week). Thanks

They have always hit on 16 and stayed at 17 on all the cruises I have been on.

More often that not it will not be the dealer who beats you.

A couple weeks ago on our cruise I was doing very well, recouped all my losses and then some...

Well two others joined us (3 seated) 1 at first base and 1 at third.

Dealer would have 14 showing 1st base would have 15 and take a hit. Bam they draw a face care and bust and dealer pulls a 5 or 6 to beat or push all ties...after dropping 70 semi quickly, I left the table...

So moral of story 1 base can kill the table faster than the dealer can...

That;s as bad as someone hitting a 20. When those things happen I leave the table!!!

For the last 4-5 years (perhaps longer) they ABSOLUTELY stand on hard 17, and HIT on soft 17's.

I bet you can tell us all about "other players" :D .....

hope y'all had a great cruise!!!

I'm sure that happened on your cruises but mine followed the Carnival Rules of standing on soft 17. See the link below.

I think we've all found that a lot of the Carnival policies online are seriously outdated. I just got off the Ecstasy a few weeks ago and spent a considerable amount of time at the Black Jack tables. They most certainly hit on soft 17 and is stated (literally written) on all the tables there.

Well if you just got off then I will go with you. Thanks for the correction.

I thought I remembered them hitting on a soft 17 too. It only changes the correct play on a few hands by I stick to the statistically correct play on every hand. Thanks for the input.

You don't actually believe that, do you? Certainly you know that another player making a "wrong" play is equally likely to help you as to hurt you. He could have just as easily cleared out the 5 or 6 so the dealer took a face card.

I could see it if you were somewhat annoyed when another player makes a, let's call it an unorthodox play, just because you like to see the game played well. But I don't see how you could think it impacts your return over the long run. Unless you are a believer in fate or karma or something rather than hard math. And since you sound like a serious gambler, I'm guessing you go by the math.

Statistically, true enough, but it's very difficult to not follow the progression of the next few cards and get irritated when people play hunches and feelings as if the cards and their feelings are on the same cosmic zone. I don't know why we only notice when a poorly played hand, eq, a player hitting on dealer with 6 showing, negatively affects of the outcome...cuz as you said it could have just as well caused a winning card to be dealt. I'll still get irritated, and will possibly use poor play of others as an excuse to blame my losses on. BJ is still the best deal out there when doubling and splitting at the proper times. Mike

Is a soft 17 made up of no cards worth 10?

A soft 17 includes an ace that when counted as 11 makes a 17 (A-2-4 or A-5-A are both soft 17). It is impossiple to bust a soft 17 with a single card and the house gains a 0.2% advantage by hitting them.

What are the fun 21 tables that I keep hearing about? What is the difference?

If I'm not mistaken it is played like blackjack, but all of the Queen's have been removed from the decks. I think it improves the houses' odds.

It really helps the house odds (against you) as they don't tell you there are missing cards, and even for those who are aware - they do not understand that a major strategy shift must occur. For example, you will hit your 13 on a dealer 5 !!!

Yes... those OTHER players!

We had a GREAT time - the Solstice was absolutely stunning. I would love to sail another Solstice class ship again. Especially since the casino will pick up the room tab on several sailings! Celebrity knows how to "reward" players of certain levels much better than Carnival does!

Ok, then my next question- Why in the hell would anyone play that? Does it pay out at higher odds?

To quote 'The Wizard":

  1. Late surrender allowed.
  2. Double after split allowed.
  3. Re-splitting aces allowed.
  4. A player 21 always wins.
  5. Player blackjack beats dealer blackjack.
  6. Player may double on any number of cards.
  7. Player may usually hit and double down after splitting aces.
  8. Player may surrender after doubling, known as "double down rescue." The player forfeits an amount equal to his original bet.
  9. A five-card 21 pays 3 to 2, a six-card 21 pays 2 to 1, a seven or more card 21 pays 3 to 1. Bonus not honored after doubling or splitting.
  10. A 6-7-8 or 7-7-7 of mixed suits pays 3 to 2, of the same suit pays 2 to 1, and of spades pays 3 to 1. These bonuses usually do not pay after doubling or splitting, but some casinos allow it.

The underlined rules do NOT apply when playing Carnival's version (Fun21).
