I was thinking about Celtic Charm cruise next summer out of Southampton.

 

Has anyone had any air-cruise to Gatwick from the U.S., since it is closer than Heathrow?

I may have misunderstood your post, but if you are suggesting that Gatwick is closer to Southampton than Heathrow that would be a mistake.

 

In both road distance and driving time, Heathrow is closer.

 

If you ignore road quality and speed and just look at the map then yes it is closer 'as the crow flies' but you will not get there any faster than you would from Heathrow.

Flying into LGW has one advantage IF you are doing this independently - there is direct train service from LGW to the Central Station in Southampton.

 

Now, you have to manage your own luggage on/off the train, and it is not easy with several large pieces. (Porters can assist in getting the luggage to the platform, but onto the train is your issue. You could tip well enough that they could be there on the platform to assist you.) OTOH, it's a delightful ride through the English countryside and is significantly less expensive than other methods to reach Southampton. For example, advantage purchase tickets from LGW to Southampton can be bought for as little as 3 pounds per person.

 

There is less air service from the USA to LGW than into LHR, which may be a consideration.

 

Many factors are involved, not just distance.
