kadey Posted June 19, 2010 #1 Share Posted June 19, 2010 We will be in Savona in mid October. I am not coming up with a whole lot to really do in Savona and am considering an excursion to Genoa. I'm wondering if it's worth the trip to Genoa. I'd appreciate any advice, opinions and input on these two towns! Thanks -Kade

It is an interesting place to see and well worth an excursion. Haven't seen Genoa, but it is about 1 hour away. Nothing much to do in Savona- an old fort, market etc. Karen
ab0si Posted June 19, 2010 #3 Share Posted June 19, 2010 Genova certainly has more to see and do than Savona. In fact, Genova has become a rather nice place to spend a little time (much nicer than it was 20 years ago). Of course, it depends on your interests. The other poster recommended Monaco which I find a remarkably boring place .. tastes and interests vary, but Savona itself has little to recommend it. euro cruiser Posted June 19, 2010 #4 Share Posted June 19, 2010 If you do decide to check out Savona, the town offers an English-language tourism web site here: http://www.comune.savona.it/EN/Page/t01/view_html?idp=1931
alexandra cruiser Posted June 19, 2010 #5 Share Posted June 19, 2010 we took the train down and sort of cool place to explore, a few years ago it was on the rough side by the port, but hear its much nicer now...get a guidebook and also google it to see if its for you.A day there was about right for us,but glad we went.Agree with above poster re Monaco, not our thing at all, very small, crowded, with a casino ...nice port views ,of course....but too far for day trip IMO..;)
BiggiB Posted June 19, 2010 #6 Share Posted June 19, 2010 Depends, how much time you have between arriving in Savona and the ship's departure. Genoa is not that far away. An InterCity train takes 33 minutes and the Genova Principe is a short taxi ride from the port and the famous Aquarium. The Old City can be reached by foot and there are regular guided tours in town. If you have time enough and want to stay in Italy, take the train the other direction and go to one of the nice seaside resorts, such as Alassio or Diano Marina for a relaxing day at the coast. Monaco is a different story and here the same applies as to any other port: If you know where to go, there is much to see and a day is almost too short. There are very good information about the sightseeing on the http://www.visitmonaco.com website. However, taking a train to Monaco takes between 2 1/2 and 3 hours and requires the change of trains at the Italian border in Ventimiglia. The train runs along the coast line; it is a very scenic ride at low speed. If you consider to go to Monaco, I would suggest to take a rental car. The Autostrada goes directly from Savona to Monaco, is a toll road and the journey will take you about 1 1/2 hours, depending how much you are used to Italian traffic. Enjoy! When we were looking for a car rental in Savona about 6 months ago, I couldn't find an automatic for under $400 a day! Savona is not a good place for car rentals, unfortunately.
