Cruise to Hawaii-Casino Laws

Hi Everyone: We are looking at a RT cruise from LA to Hawaii. Does anyone really know the laws? We would have 4 sea days, 5 days of different islands, and 4 sea days back. I am guessing the casino would be open during the eight sea days, but would they be open after leaving each island at about 7:00-8:00 each night on the way to the next island? I know casinos are closed while in port anyway so is this any different because of the gambling laws in Hawaii? Thanks for your help. No casino would really knock this cruise out of contention.

MrCo9: This is not a common itinerary. There hasn't been one just like it yet where it is RT Calif to Calif. It is only scheduled for 2 times in 2011. They do stop in Ensenda Mexico on the last night for three hours (?) which may have something to do with someone posting before regarding you must go to a foreign port in order for the casino to be allowed open. I guess I should call my cruise consultant but I just don't trust them. Sometimes if you call three times, you get three different answers.

  • 2 weeks later...

we were on Golden/hawaai last October, the casino is closed the whole time you are around Hawaai, only open on the sea days.

Don't let it stop you going -we are in casino every night until it closes but still had a brilliant time. This cruise is lovely

rpbcouple, they have been doing roundtrip L.A. or San Diego to Hawaii since at least 2004 [that's when we did our first one.] Holland America, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Princess, and Celebrity have all done them and the cruislines in 2011 and 2012 have added a lot more. We were always too busy while in the islands to go to the casino, but for the trip there and the trip back, the casinos were hopping on all the ships that we've sailed on.

I was on the Zaandam in March to Hawaii. San Diego to San Diego

The casino was open at night if we were not in Port In Hawaii.

The Casino was not opened if we were docked in port.

Most of our port stops sailed at about 5. Honolulu was 11:00 at night so the Casino Did not open at Night. Also the ship docked in Ensenada at about 8:00 on the last night the Casino was closed on the that night.

The Casino Staff said that Holland America was Grandathered in regards to the gamiling law while sailing the Islands. Royal Carribean and Princess were not Grandfather so they were closed while sailing the Islands.

It would probably depend on what ship you would be in, to know if the Casino was going to be open or not.

Hope this info helps!

Sorry to jump the thread (although I was interested in the gambling in Hawaii question!)- but I'm going to Hawaii on the Zaandam March 2011 and wondering how the weather was and if you had an enjoyable trip?..

I went March 11, 2010. So it is about the same time. The weather was cool the first couple of days out. As we got closer to Hawaii it was a little bit warmer. The weather was great in Hilo, Kaui, Maui, In Honolulu in was Chilly, In Kona the weather was warm but the Sea's were chopping so the tendering was slow.

All & All I had a great time. Everything wasn't totally perect. When I got home I found out that there were others that had problems.

I had a great enough time that I am doing this cruise again in October that leaves out of Vancouver and returns to San Diego. Even with the Airfare and Hotel it is still cheaper than when I did it in March!

I had things tied up at work and couldn't make the Alaska season but I saw the Oct. 2 Zaandam sailing at a great price.

This time we will be in port till 11:00 at night on 3 islands so the casino will proably not be open. We don't have the stop at Ensenada and it will be open til closing on the last night.

Hope this helps.

Gail

Thanks so much everyone for your answers. There are three nights when we leave an island at 4:00, 5:00, and 7:00 so I hope the casino will be open on those nights. The other two nights we will be in port until 11:00 so I am now assuming they will not be open. We also (like Liketraveling) will be in Ensenada from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM on the last night. It is a Carnival cruise. They might fall under the nongrandfathered along with Princess. I will call their casino department but as we all know....you can call three different times and get three different answers. :(
