Stategy to....for elegant night

As a single guy, I have NO regrets with purchasing a black suit which passes as quasi-tux. The ladies seem to like it that way. hint hint

 

Yup!! However, after leaving MT and getting around more "suits"..had to realize it's more than that..in making the man. Great plan..the black suit!!!:)...Will not need it in Glacier..but this year..may think about SEVERAL layers..just not as warm this summer either:(.

what is the problem? if he wears a tux, i have to wear some fancy formal dress so we sort of look like we go together.

 

I like wearing nice black slacks with a dressy blouse... our pictures look much better if he is in a suit when i wear my pants outfits.

 

My normal attire all day long at home is a t-shirt and shorts. it is hard enough to get used to closed-in dress shoes, let alone pantyhose and a bra!

Have a dear friend..happy to say in touch with again...who has worked as a cruise travel agent since 1988 or so. Her business partner sadly passed in 2002 or so...they were just best friends and had an agency together over 10 years..and he was a guy..she a gal.

 

He was just more finicky and it was so funny to hear about his luggage and tux woes. She always beat him in the what they were hauling department. Now..they did travel more upscale (it's Crystal in Europe this week:mad::D) as time went along..but she always found the easy packing dressy thngs..guys who wear suits several times on fancy cruises..well with all accessories in can be alot!!

I am not a suit and tie , tuxedo guy myself. But surely a nice pair of dress pants , and dress shirt and either a tie or a sportcoat (Doesn't have to be both) can't be all bad for a couple hours.

Do Not Do these things ... You obviously love him and like the way he looks just as you found him. He must be a good guy with a good heart and makes you happy which is why you are still with him.

 

I understand you want the pics and the nice night together , but its obviously something that isn't him. I am sure you wouldn't like him harping at you to do something that really wasn't you.

 

Yes it would be nice if he dressed up for you . But even if he doesn't Isn't he still the guy you fell for?

 

Like some one else said Pick your battles and just enjoy your cruise and eachother.

I am taking my BF on his first cruise, but I am having a hard time to convince to bring something nice for elegant night. I am only asking for sport jacket and slacks...maybe a tie would be nice.

 

He is a very casual person.

 

Then I wonder, how do you all fellow cruisers convince your dearly to wearing something nice for the elegant night.

 

Maybe some tips from the guys too?

I would just as soon wear shorts or jeans and a t-shirt myself, but, My wife and I do not get a chance to dress and have pictures made very often (for her not me I know what we look like :p). I have worn a suit and tie which I found uncomfortable and worried about getting stuff all over it. The next cruise I carried a suit but wore a nice tropical shirt.(yes it was nice! it is black silk with dragons made with gold thread!) When we get to our table we take all of the oligatory pictures and I shed the jacket and enjoy the meal and company. After the meal we go out for dancing and drinks and watch the ocean go by. After that you will have to use your own imagination, Mama taught me not to kis and tell:rolleyes:. I did this the first time for her and ended up enjoying it myself and look forward to it. Just ask him sweetly and I'll bet he will come around.

My husband has learned to enjoy dressing more formally over the years. Also, the longer cruises will have people more formally dressed. I've seen everything from tuxes to sequins, to suits and Sunday dresses on elegant night.

I know. While a suit may not make a man a gentleman, it sure can fool some people.

My parents and I plan on taking layers to Montana. From my understanding high 65 low 40 is the norm for September. lower elevations that is.

Nice dress shoes, shirt, pants, and tie and your golden. I wear suits all the time for work and never want to wear a suit when on vacation especially in 90 to 100 degree weather.

 

So if you want him to wear a suit. My advice since your not married. Sex before the cruise and sex during the cruise. Never fails. I should know :D.

Dress pants, shirt and shoes with a tie and you are good to go. Anything less then spend Elegant Night trying out the pizza. It is awesome.

as a guy who hates ties I can tell you this. Why is a tie and coat so important to you. You want him to wear something nice, it seems that you want nice on your terms. Don't worry about what he wears, concentrate on things that are really important that you can control, not things that are his choice.

I haven't read thru all the replys but I told my DH that I want to eat in the dining room and if I have to eat alone, I will. He either goes by the dress code or eats at the buffet alone. So far, we've always eaten together and he always looks nice to me. He even takes off his hat in the dining room and that is a miracle in itself.

Yes, I called it fate...this guy I started dating 6 months ago. He is the absolute opposite of what I was looking for, don't even match any requirement on my list! Yet for some reason, I have a feeling, he is the one! That's why I am not pushing it. But dosen't hurt to try.

My grandmother would say dinner is over before you start if the hat was on..now..especiallly here in more casual restaurants those hats:rolleyes:...like hats off at dinner too..lol.

glad you're not in charge of the dress code. While that might be your minimum requirements it's not Carnivals.

Never thought I'd hear her say that but she stated she's been getting dressed up every day for 33 years and she'd prefer not to if she didn't have to.

With 20+ cruises I would think you would have learned the history behind 'Formal Night' and how much it has changed from back in the days where you would dress to the T every night in a dining room ;) I am not a fan of those corny picture booths they have all over the ship.

 

 

Now to the OP's question and it being her BF first cruise. I would rather her BF go ahead and at least bring dress shoes/shirt/pants w/a tie in case they are seated with a group of old schoolers that are dressed to the 'T'...just in case. On our second cruise we were seated with a lot of people that were dressed up..no tux but everyone in a suit and tie. There was a couple on their first cruise at our table who didn't dress up at all...dressy shorts and a Hawaiian shirt for the guy and jeans and nice top for the lady. I could tell they were miserable from the time they sat down. Everyone at the table could see it after they made a friendly comment about the dress code. My wife and I got to know them and hung at at the casino with them several times and it was apparent that they heard how relaxed the 'Elegant' night was from a internet website.

 

Personally I don't care what you wear. At the same time, I don't think they will ever dress down on a 'Elegant' night again....if they in fact decide to cruise again. I have been on many cruises and it is sad that Carnival is the only place where you will read how it is the norm to dress how you want on a 'Elegant' night. That kind of info isn't helping the first time cruises at all.

 

Play it safe first timers....expect everyone at your table to be dressed up and expect a tux or two as well. Now, dress how you want. I hope the OP and her BF dress up and rock out in the dining room! They will be glad they did.

Of our crew, my 6 year old daughter is the only one who WANTS to dress up- LOL! However, I do have appropriate attire for Elegant night- as does my husband. He didn't want to pack it and was all set to do Lido deck dinner on Elegant night- but then I told him that was the only time he'll get Lobster and he can get as much as he wants! I am a first time cruiser and don't know if in fact that is the only time you can get Lobster- but it sold him on packing some nice clothes! :D

 

As for the thin walls in the cabins- thanks for the warning!!!! We will be surrounded by my brother's family- wife and 4 boys... We'll have to be careful!
