Stategy to....for elegant night

Hi,

I am taking my BF on his first cruise, but I am having a hard time to convince to bring something nice for elegant night. I am only asking for sport jacket and slacks...maybe a tie would be nice.

He is a very casual person.

Then I wonder, how do you all fellow cruisers convince your dearly to wearing something nice for the elegant night.

Maybe some tips from the guys too?

Thanks

Carol

I pack for him and tell him what he's wearing. Easy.

Sex promises work before you are married. Afterward they know you are lying. "You will? Really? Okay. WAIT!!! When?" He knows it ain't gonna happen LOL

Pick your battles. You have to decide if this is a fight worth having.

In the grand scheme of things, Elegant Night (nee Formal Night) isn't so much the Big Deal that it used to be. Back in the day, I'd bring a tux. These days, not so much.

I don't. He wears a button down shirt and dress pants, nicely pressed. I know it's hardly elegant, but it's plenty nice compared to many other diners. If he wanted to be any more casual than that, though, I'd probably talk him into the buffet for elegant night.

Sure you need him to wear a sport jacket? I have a feeling that would be a sticking point for my (also very casual) BF

no, I am not going to fight with him.

but I want a nice picture with him. That's all. Not going to fight with him, as i want him to enjoy cruising, so he can go with me all the time :)

Since I start dating him, never see him wear a tie, or jacket, figure it would be a nice opportunity

My DBF was late picking up his suit coat from the cleaners but no worries we thought. There was a suit coat and tie at my apartment along with dress shoes. Yeah, you guessed it...we forgot that too. I am not missing lobster night so here ya go. Here is my man on elegant night, button down shirt, khaki pants and the tennis shoes (instead of flip flops). I think he looks elegant enough.

Here I am. We dont exactly match but hey...its lobster night!

As long as he is wearing something nice I dont think anyone will say anything. We always change clothes as soon as dinner is done anyway.

If you can't convince how would any of us:confused:

Well, i do realize it's up to me to do the job. Just think maybe some of you did something to crack your own tough cookie. Maybe someone have some unusal strategy

Show him pics of my Andrew. He is a biker dude and conformed long enough for dinner. He actually enjoyed it as witnessed by the smirk on his face. I think we ruined our dinner couple though. We have a tendancy to feed each other and take pics of our food for Cruise Critic.

My DH is a jean and t-shirt type guy also. First cruise told him he had to dress up or he couldn't eat in the dinning room it was a rule. Now he makes sure suit is packed and he wears it to dinner. Tie comes off right after dinner. I get what I want and he might get lucky cause he cleans up good. Doxie:rolleyes:

You could just tell him there is a dress code; tie and jacket. If he's anythign like my husband, he's lazy, will take your word for it, and will never look it up. When you are in the MDR and he sees the bermuda shorts and sandals, he can glare at you, but then you just pretend you are appalled, "Well I never! Walmart of cruiselines? More like Big Lots!" Get a few nice pics, then let him take off his jacket. My husband actually asks me what is appropriate because he doesn't want to look out of place. He knows he can dress down a bit, but he also knows that it is my week to wear a dress every night to dinner. He is considerate enough to not be as comfortable as he could be so I can be happy and look like a girl for a week LOL

So sex is the ultimate strategy? so I should starve him before the cruise.

I guess i need to go to vs and pick something up to lure him.

Maybe be I can get to start wearing those so call "ugly" shirt on the cruise too, hahha

I would rather have my husband there with me at dinner in slacks and a button down than at the buffet if I try to "make" him wear a jacket. *Snort* ain't gonna happen. I pick my battles. It's enough for me to get him in long pants two nights a cruise! I never thought to lure him with sex because I guess it is just not my style to use sex that way. But no judgment here! Do what you gotta do!

Ditto. Sort of. :)

He lays out what he thinks he's taking so I can pack it. Then I pack what he's really taking. :D

I will say that I only pack his dress clothes. Other than that I tell him, "You can pack 5 pair of shorts and tshirt. Pack socks and undies if you're gonna wear em."

From a guy...

Slacks..Dockers will do or comparable (neutral colors)

Shirt..Polo works great, Red, Grey, Black..take all three (inexpensive and easy to find, works for everyday wear)

Jacket..Navy Blue, goes with "all" most everything

Shoes..deck shoes, some type of slip on, color coordinated sneakers

Then you can dress down easily for the show or casino after the 2 hour dinner.:D

From the male perspective. Tell him exactly this. You want him to wear it just long enough to get the pictures (which I gather is what you really want). Tell him if it is that uncomfortable he can shed the jacket and tie after the pics and just wear his sport shirt to dinner.

You might tell him how much you would like the chance to dress up for the evening. Let him know that you will have the opportunity to have special pictures taken that night, and also don't forget to let him know that you want to "show him off"! ;):)

Is a BF same as BFF? Sex ? Blue jeans work, no need for dress or prom night clothes. Carnival requires none.

You wish to look nice. No need to purposely be under-dressed.

Trousers and a button shirt with collar makes one fit in on casual nights. On formal/elegant nights a coat and/or tie is expected.

When he gets in the shower...hide all of his other clothes. He wears what you want or starve.

j/k

wouldn't work anyway cause he could still order room service
