cruise to no where

Recommended Posts

Has anyone ever done a cruise to no where out of new york? How was it? Do they still have shows? And which ship did you go on? Thanks guys!

I went on a CTN on the NCL Spirit out of NY in 2008. I went with 3 other friends and we had the greatest time. There was a show, but I can't remember if the casinos were open. There was karaoke, game shows (Quest), White Hot party, etc. etc.

If you think about the price of dinner at a restaurant in NYC plus a show and then a club, the CTN turns out to be a pretty good deal. Just get the cheapest priced room because you will never spend much time there.

Hi and yes my DH and I went on a cruise to nowhere just last Jan.2,2010 on the Gem. We had a blast and are hopefully planning on doing it again this year. The casino is open after you get so far out of port, the shops are open, all the dining rooms, buffet(indoors, of course, lol) lounges, etc. There is a show, some game type activities, and of course all the bars are open too. I know the spa was open because we took a tour, as was the pool(brrrr) and hot tubs. There were several people in the hot tubs, and a couple of people in the pool but only for a short time for a photo op and then they ran like mad for the hot tubs.

There was a very cold sail away party with a bbq on deck--it wasn't so bad if you could find a secluded area to block the wind. If you do go, just be prepared to have a lot of people in the common ship areas. Because of the cold, there is no one out on the decks too much and the open area seating at the back of the ship is closed as far as eating, so people on board are kinda all in the same spots. I won't lie, it is quite crowded but if you plan on that and relax, you will have an amazing time.

We did a lot of dancing, roaming the ship, eating(yum), bowled at 2am next to some very happy cruisers, and then went to the casino till 5am.

We are not big drinkers, and there are some on the ship that I guess go to just party, but everyone we met was extremely pleasant and there for a good time.

If you can go with the flow, this is a great experience--we really felt like we had cruised and it was only for one day.

Good luck if you go--maybe we'll see you on the ship!!!

I cruised to nowhere on the Dawn out of NYC.

This was an 18th birthday present for my nephew since you can gamble at 18 on NCL, so yes, the casino was open. Unfortunately for him, very high table minimums, very crowded and very smoky. But hysterically, the Spinaker had this blackjack game with digital female dealers who were extremely buxom and scantilly clad... So that 18 year old male was digging that, even if they weren't real. Actually, we were both pretty darn lucky at that game.

We had a mini suite for three. We tried to get a full suite but those were sold out. I felt it was a nice room but crowded with 3 adults, one being a teen over 6' tall.

The cruise to nowhere was lots of fun, although the vibe is different. Not worse, just different. It's like people are trying to pack everything in that they want to do but in the less time alloted. For that reason, specialty restaurant and spa reservations fill up fast, bingo is crowded, as is the gym and other public areas. I think people might tend to go, go, go more and relax in their stateroom less. I know we did. We did Tepenyaki one night and Le Bistro the other night, (our CTN was a 2 nighter, there are also 1 nighters). I did a spa treatment, but my mom could not get a reservation.

It seemed to be very upbeat and fast paced. A lot of New Yorkers... Which was a blast, since I like 'em, (even though those Yankees of their have kept my Texas Rangers from winning a playoff series...).

Wexare not big drinkers. So we didn't feel like it was a booze cruise for us, but a lot of others did... but you find that on all cruises, with the shorter ones having more than the long ones.

Regardless, yes... I'd do it again. Won't pass up the chance to cruise, be it one night or fourteen. I get goose bumps at sailaway, and sailing out of NYC past Lady Liberty and under the Verezzano bridge, (not sure I spelled that right, sorry New Yorkers), is perhaps the best sailaway ever.

Hope this helps.

I have done 4 in the last 3 years. 2 were in the fall and 2 in January. Of course the fall was nice because you could still enjoy the outdoors, but winter was fun too. It was difficult to get dinner reservations and spa reservations (get to the pier early and do this right away). But if you go with the attitude it's just a fun overnight, you will have a great time. I've been twice with a group of friends, once with my husband, and once with just one friend. hope to go back next winter (none offered out of NY in the fall). Would love to do a 2 nighter!!

We've done two of the 2 night cruises out of Boston, and one of the 1 night cruises out of NY. They are very high energy cruises with everyone trying to eat and drink all they can and see everything on the ships.

We like to book the 1 night cruises and then stay on for the following cruise, just to detox...:D We use that first night to casually unpack, get aquainted with the ship and unwind after travelling to port....so by the next day when everyone is getting off/on the ship we are really ready to start our vacation.

*An added incentive is that you can pick up your duty free purchases after the 1 night cruise, and store them in your cabin for the following cruise. :) At least until NCL catches on to this little loop hole...:D

What is the payment schedule of a 2 nighter? I am looking into it, my friends are tight on cash now and they want toknow how it all works.

Thanks

We paid a $100 deposit, with final payment due 90 days prior......but some travel agents want final payment in a little sooner than that, so check with your specific TA if you aren't booking directly with NCL.

I've been on the Dawn for a CTN, and back in the 90's, I did quite a few out of Miami/Ft. Lauderdale. I even went on one that was a "convention" for the industry I work in (imported flowers).

I find them to be pretty expensive for the time you spend on the ship. I probably wouldn't do it again unless I got a sharp price. I don't like paying more than $100 a day for a cruise, max, and I've been able to keep to that (and better). Paying any more than that just seems like a waste. I'd rather save for a little longer and go on a 7 day.
