Lair Bear Posted October 11, 2010 Author #26 Share Posted October 11, 2010 We'll be in town Nov 26-Dec 2. Are there Christmas markets in Amsterdam? I haven't been able to find any mention online. I know I visited one in Belgium, but cannot remember Amsterdam..... Thanks for the input so far!! I don't know about Amsterdam, but there will be a small one in Rotterdam. The big Christmas market will be in Valkenburg which is near Maastrich in the southern part of the Netherlands. http://www.fluweelengrot.nl/default.asp?id=
Hoyaheel Posted October 12, 2010 #27 Share Posted October 12, 2010 I spent Carnaval in Maastricht once. That was fun:p Guess we'll have to be satisfied with the multitudes of "regular" markets in Amsterdam, since it appears we'll be too early for Christmas markets. I'm going to try to walk my jet lag off the day we arrive and get over to the flower market so we can have something for our apartment.
Lair Bear Posted October 12, 2010 Author #28 Share Posted October 12, 2010 Yes, there's a combo ticket you can get with the Spido tour and access to the maritime museum in Rotterdam. Sadly in the off season, only the short harbor tour is available- my husband is very depressed, as he could gladly spend the entire day in the harbor looking at things:D Don't give up too easily. Here is a contact in Rotterdam that may be able to help your husband (and you). Perhaps she can accomodate a 'special' harbor tour for you two. Drop her a line and explain. Her name is Carla van Utrecht. utrecht@havenmuseum.nl Would it not be fun to have a 'private' tour on an old tug boat?

The last person my husband contacted about a private tour would have charged around $1000 which was simply too dear for us.....
Lair Bear Posted October 14, 2010 Author #30 Share Posted October 14, 2010 I have been loving (and printing!) these walking tour suggestions - we're going to Amsterdam for vacation in November. I wonder if you have listed any specific weather/timing related caveats? Or should we carry on with our plan to bundle up and head out regardless? I don't know if you are aware that the seven walking tours are now all in pdf format. I have taken out a lot of the pictures to make the file shorter and it should take a bit less time to open them. To see a listing of all go to http://www.*****.com/travel2.htm And enjoy your trip. I will be curious if you are able to do something about the harbor tour in Rotterdam. Hoyaheel Posted October 15, 2010 #31 Share Posted October 15, 2010 And enjoy your trip. I will be curious if you are able to do something about the harbor tour in Rotterdam. We sent an email to your contact and this was her response. I told my husband we could do whatever he wants; he hasn't decided yet. Thanks for the pdf links on the walking tours!! Dear mister [redacted], You can rent a boat from the museum. That wil cost 300,- excl. VAT for 2 hours and if possible we could try to find a guided to travel with you. Or you could look at Rederij Thor they have eveningtours wit food and such things but they will not tell you a lot about the harbour. You also have the splashtours. You go with a bus into the water – but their tour is shorter than the spido. You can also go with a bus to futureland where we build a new peace of harbour for Rotterdam. Maybe that is the best idee for you. http://www.maasvlakte2.com/nl/futureland I hope I ‘ve helpt you in some way. Kind regaards, Met vriendelijke groet, Monica Lundström Het Havenmuseum Hoofd. afd. Ine Posted October 15, 2010 #32 Share Posted October 15, 2010 I think the tour to Maasvlakte is the least interesting, you will tour to/around a large commercial area of the port. The regular Spido tours of about 1 hour are nice and can easily be combined with a visit to the Maritime museum. The Spido tours sail even in off-season. A nice place to visit is the Hotel New York, which is next to the Rotterdam terminal. Hotel New York used the be the old headoffice of Holland America Line. To get there simply walk across the big white Erasmusbrug, or take one of the watercabs. Unfortunately the watertaxi site in in duitch ony, but check it on: http://www.watertaxirotterdam.nl/ Opstapplaatsen= places to get on the watertaxi. Tarieven= rates (as you see there are 2 different rates). One is to/from hotel New York to Leuvehaven, the other is a tour on water in minutes etc. In case you want more infor in english, send them an e-mail with your questions at: info@watertaxirotterdam.nl

Just add the /english etc. http://www.watertaxirotterdam.nl/english/index.html You might also note that the taxi service includes trips to Kinderdijk with all its windmills. Hoyaheel Posted October 16, 2010 #34 Share Posted October 16, 2010 Thanks guys. My husband is actually interested in the commercial area of the port! On our Panama Canal cruise, he photographed all the tugboats and ahead of time he had printed out information on every tug that works the canal - so he'd take a photo, see what the name was, and look it up in his reference materials. So he loves the commercial side of maritime business!

Perhaps a visit, or better, a tour. Who knows!!! We went to the northern part of Scotland on a cruise ship this summer. I contacted the harbor master at the port where we were to dock. He provided me with tons of suggestions about what and where to go and sightsee. I grant you, that the port was tiny by comparison with Rotterdam. But you might check the following http://www.harbourmaster.nl/countries/netherlands/rotterdam.html The email address for the harbor master is scherpenzeel.ehmc@harbourmaster.org His name is Capt. Ben van Scherpenzeel.
maggiemag Posted March 2, 2014 #36 Share Posted March 2, 2014 I have started to put together a second walking tour of Amsterdam and I would like suggestions about additional attractions, etc. We will be leaving shortly for a trip to Europe and Amsterdam will be part of this. So, I intend to do the walking tour I came up with and should have more input in a couple months. Meanwhile some of you might have a look at the following http://www.********.com/amsterdam2.html Keep in mind that the total length of this walk is less than three miles. So there is plenty of room for some expansion, unless you like to spend extra time at the museums. Is it possible to still receive the walking tour that you have put together. It would be very much appreciated.
Mparis184 Posted March 9, 2014 #37 Share Posted March 9, 2014 This is a very old thread - I don't even know if anyone is still connected via Cruise Critic. I would LOVE to get information on these walking tours - The link doesn't work any more. If anyone has them please email me at cruiztime at yahoo dot come. Thanks so much, Marion
Mparis184 Posted April 13, 2014 #38 Share Posted April 13, 2014 Really? You sound persimistic or perhaps you missed the significance of this wonderful little oasis in the middle of old Amsterdam. It has charm, history and some of the oldest houses in the city. The people who lived here were very special, in my opinion. I just finished the second walking tour of Amsterdam and it has some pictures of the Begijnhof plus several museums that are worth considering along the way. It does not include the Red Light district and is maybe a bit more oriented towards the 'newer' and fun parts of Amsterdam that you can explore. For details go to http://www.********.com/amsterdam2.html I want to thank those who made suggestions earlier and I have tried to incorporate some of them in this latest version of the Amsterdam Walking Tour, part 2. The links to the walking tour (one and two) didn't work. Can you type out the entire web address leaving off the http://www and .com/amsterdam2.html and only list the 8 missing characters so I can access the link. I will be visiting Amsterdam next month and would love to take the walking tours. Thanks so much! Marion
