luvs2travl Posted July 31, 2010 #1 Share Posted July 31, 2010 Spirit Airlines is starting to charge for carry-on bags today, July31, 2010 according to the AP. Here is the link (I hope it works!): http://www.yahoo.com/_ylt=AiOYq33GI6Il1zI28x6fOLCbvZx4/SIG=15p8qknve/EXP=1280702121/**http%3A//us.rd.yahoo.com/finance/news/rss/story/*http%3A//us.rd.yahoo.com/finance/news/topfinstories/*http%3A//biz.yahoo.com/ap/100731/apfn_us_spirit_carry_on_fee.html Fee will be $30.00 (if paid in advance to boarding) per bag needing to be stored in the overhead bin or $45.00 per bag if paid at boarding. Guess the next step will be charging to use the restroom.
mindydaile Posted August 1, 2010 #2 Share Posted August 1, 2010 Unfortunately it wasn't hard to see this coming. Once they started charging for checked bags people were trying to carry on everything but the kitchen sink to get around the fees.
kenish Posted August 1, 2010 #3 Share Posted August 1, 2010 Spirit's carry on (and other) fees are old news on this board, but a reminder doesn't hurt. In airline rankings for "supplemental revenue". Spirit is consistently #1 or #2 for % of total revenue from the extra fees, % of total passenger cost paid in fees, and dollars per passenger raised in fees. Since they don't carry nearly as many passengers as AA, UA, etc, the only place they aren't at the top of the list is total dollar revenue. imsulin Posted August 9, 2010 #5 Share Posted August 9, 2010 I thought it was really wierd that this same news was broadcast months ago (April 2010), and then suddenly re-broadcast. What's changed, and why all of a sudden the new attention now? This is old news.
