San Diego - Sheraton Hotel and Marina

Recommended Posts

We will be arriving at the Sheraton Hotel and Marina around 1:00 pm next month so we will have some extra time as we will not be boarding our cruise until 1:00 pm the following day. That gives us a little extra time to explore the area if there is anything of interest not too far way. Any suggestions for sightseeing and for a restaurant??

NICE restaurant walking distance is Island Prime with great views of San Diego Bay.

See: http://www.cohnrestaurants.com/restaurants/islandprime/

UN-fortunately, your hotel is close to downtown but you'll need to either take a taxi or take the free shuttle back to the airport and take a bus to go the 3 miles to the rest of the downtown area. You could visit ships along the waterfront, go to Balboa Park and/or the zoo etc.

You can also take the hop on hop off tour on a bus made to look like an old fashioned trolley car.

One of the main stops is right by the cruise terminal.

As above, you would need to take a cab or a city bus to get anywhere from that hotel. Island Prime is good, but somewhat expensive, although it does have a great view. I can't really recommend any of the other restaurants on Harbor Island currently though.

You could take a cab to Little Italy (about 2 miles) and walk around there. Many good places to eat, a few galleries, a few shops, a nice way to spend an afternoon (esp. if it is a Saturday when they have their Farmer's Market as well). One of my favorite restaurants is the Indigo Grill, and of course you would have to have a dessert at Extraordinary Desserts!

You could also take a cab to Old Town (probably $15-20 one way) or to Balboa Park (Zoo, museums, gardens, the Old Globe theater, IMAX theater) for a pleasant afternoon. Old Town has many restaurants, and in Balboa Park I can recommend The Prado, or even Albert's (inside the Zoo).

You could stroll down to the end of Harbor Island, there is a boardwalk going past all the marinas or a nice park walk on the bay side. At the end is Tom Ham's Lighthouse, it's one of the oldest and finest on the bay (take it from a native only the Bali Hai on Shelter Island is better, also built by Tom Ham) the dining room has the best sunset view of downtown San Diego there is...

If you are interested you can get a great sandwich at the deli between the 2 towers of the hotel. It is a marina place with great views. They also have a great breakfast. They also sell wine at reasonable prices. All of the above are also true if you want a nice sitdown dinner. We know the area as we had a sailboat that we deocked there. Enjoy
