Peggy's Cove & Titanic or LUNENBURG

Recommended Posts

We will be doing St. Martins from St. Johns, from Halifax I am trying to decide what to do, is there a big difference in the towns of Peggy's Cove and Lunenburg? With the Peggy's tour we would have some time in Halifax with Lunenburg we won't. What do you think?

Big Difference between Peggy's Cove and Lunenburg. Peggy's cove is a tiny little fishing village whose prime attraction is it's rugged rocky coast and lighthouse. Lunenburg is a larger town with a rich history of shipbuilding, fishing and whaling with museums, restauarants, shops and galleries.

If you go to this thread http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1253929, on post #24 I gave a review, with a link to the route layed out on a google map, of our day trip from Halifax to Peggy's Cove then on to Mahone Bay & Lunenburg. Others have also given some other ideas.

If I had a choice, I'd go to Lunenburg over Peggy's Cove. I actually don't get the attraction to Peggy's Cove myself.

But the choice between Lunenburg and Halifax would be a toss up though.

I think of Peggy's Cove is a picture stop that they've tried to turn into an attraction. It's truly a beuatiful spot but nothing really to keep you there. You're right though, a real toss up between Halifax and Lunenburg, could easily fill your time in either place. The problem with Lunenburg becomes the fact that you're using 3 hours of your short time in port getting there and back.

We did the Peggy's Cove/Titanic excursion and really enjoyed the visit to Fairview Cemetery and all the Titanic history.

Peggy's Cove is a beautiful, picture-esque spot but there is not much there. Just a few gift shops and a lighthouse. It's a great place to take pictures though.

What kinds of things are there to do or see in Lunenburg? We are driving

there when we are in port in three weeks. I heard they have carriage rides,

but any suggestions are appreciated. I have already been to Halifax and to Peggys Cove which is beautiful.:)

Lunenburg is a Unesco World Heritage Site because of its historic waterfront and old houses. It was settled by people from Germany about 1753. I have put two good websites below. It is a great town for walking around, full of shops, galleries and restaurants. It has an excellent fisheries Museum which includes an acquarium and old ships you can explore. http://museum.gov.ns.ca/fma/en/home/default.aspx

My favorite spot for lunch is Magnolia's http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g182187-d706514-Reviews-Magnolia_s_Grill-Lunenburg_Nova_Scotia.html

It is a lovely drive to Lunenburg. I would suggest going there on the old road (Route 3) and if short of time you can go back to Halifax on the highway (Route 103).

We did the Peggy's Cove and Titanic excursion and were not disappointed! Peggy's Cove was absolutely great to walk around in. Someone previously mentioned that it's a tiny town (population 35) whose big attraction is the lighthouse. You can walk out on the rocks to the edge of the water and get very close to the lighthouse. The ride out to Peggy's Cove and back was absolutely beautiful.

If you do this, I recommend visiting the Maritime Museum in the morning, so you can learn more about the Titanic before you visit the cemetery in the afternoon.

We liked this excursion b/c it gave us time to explore Halifax in the morning.

That being said, we haven't been to Luenburg, so we can't compare it. We chose the Peggy's Cove and Titanic tour because my husband was interested in the Titanic part and I wanted to go to a little fishing village - it was a nice compromise :)
