What currency should we tip in?

Recommended Posts

Good question I was wondering the same so looking forward to seeing the answer. On the NCL Gem I went for Euros because most of the ports at least accepted euros.

I would personally prefer sterling but we will be taking Euros on the Indy so its not a big deal either way.

Hi,

We tipped in $$ as this is the currency the staff are paid in and what they use on board to make purchases.

This is a fabulous ship and itinerary. You will have a great time.

Taking dollars is a huge pain. The only other spare currency I have is Canadian dollars. I don't intend to visit the US before my cruise so its not ideal to take a small amount of US$ with the exchange rates.

I guess the way around it would be to put it on the onboard account if $'s is the only acceptable currency.

If you pre pay your gratuities then you will only need small notes for room service tips..... bar drinks already have gratuities added. Suggest Euros as a 2nd choice then as the crew are more likely to go ashore in a country using the Euro as opposed to only the once in the UK.... ATMs on board dispense $ and you are charged 3% for withdrawing $ in the Casino.

Your onboard account will be charged in $ so be sure to check your setsail pass for the option on conversion you prefer and then check with Guest Services soon after boarding that they have actually noted your request correctly.

Over the years we have asked crew the same question. Answer always the same. As long as the ship is on a European intinerary, pound/Euros/dollars are equally wlcome. As the ship gets closer to repositioning from Europe, the more the crew prefer dollars.

We always tip in Dollars but as Indie is staying in Europe for it's first winter season I suspect the crew would prefer a mix Dollars/ Euros so they don't have the hassle of exchanging money and fluctuating exchange rates when they want to spend a few Euros in port.
