What is there to do in St. John on Oct 11 holiday?

Recommended Posts

It is my understanding that Oct 11 is a Canadian holiday. Is anything open that day? Sounds like the stores are closed. Anyone know?

If it is like our stop in Halifax on their Thanksgiving Day, we only found 1 deli & the Maritime Museum open...it was dead!

We were there last year on Canada's Thanksgiving. Most stores were closed unless they catered to tourists. The restaurants near the dock were open. On their Thanksgiving Day you need to do an excursion. You can book independently, but you do need to plan on doing something other than wandering around the port.

One point: you can see the great difference in tides from your ship. You don't need to take an excursion just to see that. If you observe the area around you at both low and high tides, you will see the big difference. Many excursions take you to the Bay of Fundy, but unless you can see it at both high and low tides, you can't really appreciate the change in tides.

We just got back from a port stop in St. John, and can recommend a taxi tour by David Carroll of Carroll's Taxi Tours 506-645-0537. He picked four of us up outside the gates at the St. John port in a minivan, then gave us a wonderful scenic drive and tour of St. John and the surrrounding area. We saw the reversing falls and drove to St. Marten where we had a wonderful lunch (lobster rolls and halibut) and walked on the ocean floor. His $200 tour lasted about 4 hours, so this was a wonderful price ($50pp) for a great tour!
