TIM Wireless Internet

I just noticed that TIM has some interesting prepaid wireless internet offers.

It appears that if you have an unlocked USB GSM modem for your laptop, you can get the offers below:

*******************************

Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM)

Where to get the SIM card: In a TIM shop in Italy.

Activation of the Offers:

Offer Send following Text to 40916

Internet 100: 100 Hours per 30 Days, 19€ + 5 € activation fee PRO INTERNET100

Internet 40: 40 Hours per 30 Days, 9€ + 5 € activation fee PRO INTERNET40

********************************

While the land based GSM signal generally doesn't work at sea, it would still seem attractive to get 40 hours of true high-speed internet for 9€. - Even just while in port, or cruising along the coast.

Has anyone had any experience with this?

Thanks for telling...

We have a SIM-locked-free USB-Stick and MiFi (which will allow us to connect more than one computer (like iPhone)) over one SIM-card.

We are next weekend for 3 nights in Rome and wanted to try this or an alternative anyway.

So far we used this as alternative to ship's network

in the Netherlands (vodafone)

in Belgium (proximus)

in France (orange)

in Norway (Telenor)

in UK (T-Mobile)

The only problem is: you need to find out the access point first before you get an access...

otherwise it might try to roam although you are using a foreign SIM-card.

We are using the XS-stick which works quite well.

Can tell you after October 4, 2010 how it worked in Rome.

  • 2 weeks later...

We bought it today since "neutral" smartphone-Shop at airport was closed on Sunday.

When we went to smartphone at Termini Train Station they told that their SIMs would not work for this kind of business. So they send us off to TIM one floor higher.

It's 34.00 EUR because you need to pay 10.00 EUR extra for the SIM.

Furthermore if you used the 100 (40) hours you need to find again a TIM-store. It's not possible to refill the time credit in the next tobacco store.

Upload is quite good.

Download is very slow.

Somehow disappointing.
