Curious about auto-tips...

Does the Carnival staff know when gratuities are and aren't removed? We left our wait staff and our room steward a tip on top of the gratuities that were automatically charged to our sail and sign account because they truly were wonderful. However, the additional tips weren't as much as the auto-tips, so I was hoping that they don't think that is all they got from us. Does anyone know?

THEY KNOW!!

 

A ships crew of 1000 or so, has only about 300 that receive tips. The rest are paid normal Maritime wages according to the job importance and experience. Of the few that do receive tips, they live in a very small totally enclosed society. They know!

And they are officially notified as soon as the cruise is over. And 'sometimes' SOONER.

If you remove a tip for bad service during the cruise expect to be visted the next day asking if things have improved. You cut the waiters tip someone comes by the next day and asks if things are better (they try and get the tips back). ALL TIPS ARE POOLED! You can tip one specific person and espically not in the main dining room, too many camera's.

Im sure John the Blogger said the person who you are assigned to gets the tip, your cabin steward etc. Now they may share it out to their helpers... Im going with John Heald since he works for Carnival on this one.

This was done on The Swine Flu Cruise on the Splendor. Alot of people thought they needed to remove the tips. It was actually posted in the kitchen area if I remember correctly.

We were never visited and we had a waiter yell at us in the Dining Room. We were told we would be contacted but never were.

I have never removed those auto tips. I think they are minimal considering the service you get. Even if the service is not exactly wonderful or perfect, I think it is certainly worth it to leave them in place. I like the convenience of those autotips. And when I have a room steward or dining room waiter who give excellent service, they get a few extra bucks the last night. Even if service was less than great, I would leave those auto tips in place. This just me of course!:)

Tips are NOT pooled. I have no idea where you got that idea but it is wrong.

They definitely know who's been naughty (and removed their tips) as well as who's been nice (and not only kept their tips on, but also tipped above and beyond).

 

The only tips that are pooled are those that go to the people who work at the Lido Buffet. The folks in the MDR get their cut, as well as the Cabin Steward.

The only tips that are pooled are the Lido buffet staff, casino staff and the bar tenders. Room stewards, bar waiters and dining room waiters get theirs direct.

Your statement, ALL TIPS ARE POOLED, is 100% wrong in re: Carnival. NO 2 cruiselines do tips exactly the same way.

And Carnival pays specific amounts to the Room steward that does YOUR cabin, and the same goes for the team that serves YOUR table in the Dr.

 

The only line that I know of that does pool ALL tips is MSC.

Thank you for your responses. I just want to make sure the crew that took care of us understood that the tips we left were on top of the auto-tips. They really were great. And there were 8 of us total, so I know they earned EVERY penny they got! :)

The breakdown of the automatic gratuities is as follows:

 

$ 3.50 Per Day Stateroom Services

 

$ 5.50 Per Day Dining Room Services

 

$ 1.00 Per Day Alternative Services: distributed to other kitchen and hotel service staff

 

Any gratuities offered directly to the staff... your cabin steward, etc... goes to them and is not pooled.

 

This discussion comes around every so often and I've had it confirmed by friends at Miami...

Nope... they go to YOUR wait staff. When you get to the hostess stand, they will ask your cabin number(s). This ensures that your wait staff gets the appropriate dining room tips. ;)

Auto-tips are added to your onboard S&S account.

 

Pre-paid tips are paid with your final cruise fare payment before your cruise.

Personally, I didn't think the auto tips were enough. I tipped several staff members extra at the end of the cruise. Plus I carried a few ones around and handed them out when a person when way above & beyond. I even had one waiter try to give the tip back and tell me it wasn't necessary. I told him he earned it and I wanted him to have it.

 

I guess I did all this because I have worked for tips and I know what it is like.

 

Think about what you tip at a restaurant for just one meal and compare that to what your MDR waiter gets from the auto tips. Now, who did you get the better service from? For me, the MDR waiter was so much better and spoiled us rotten at every meal.

prior to the end of your cruise, they only know if you've removed your tip.

not correct. they will ask for your s&s, and tips will go directly to your servers, proportionately.

I always give those that provided excellent service a additional a tip in cash. I guess there are no rules about that because no one has ever refused the tip.
