blackpool belle Posted November 3, 2010 #2 Share Posted November 3, 2010 Here we go again. These two cities have never been any different when it comes to cruising. As we all know in the North we all have to bow down to the South and not only in matters of cruising
Ray66 Posted November 3, 2010 #3 Share Posted November 3, 2010 Much as I'd like to embark at Liverpool I can't see it happening as there's nowhere near Pier Head to park hundreds of cars like there is in Southampton.
John Bull Posted November 3, 2010 #4 Share Posted November 3, 2010 The new Liverpool terminal was built with £33million of EU (taxpayer's) money. The grant was for a terminal to be used for day-visits, & not to compete as a turnaround port against other ports financed independently. Carnival recently built the new Ocean Terminal at Southampton. Financed by Carnival, not the taxpayer. Portsmouth is seeking to compete with Dover & especially Southampton, with new turnaround facilities. But the Portsmouth facilities have been financed privately. Rosyth has a new turnaround terminal. Financed privately. If Liverpool wants a turnaround terminal, the simple answer is to raise the money locally to repay the EU grant then they can do what they like with their new terminal. Liverpool could form a consortium. Ask Fred to buy shares. Ask other cruiselines to buy shares. Ask local suppliers & service providers, & others who'd benefit, to buy shares. Instead of holding its hand out to the tax-payer. Yes, Liverpool would be more convenient for many cruisers living in the north, but a huge proportion of ex-UK cruisers are internationals who find the south coast far more convenient because of the proximity to both London & its airports, and geography dictates that south coast ports are much more convenient for the vast majority of ex-UK cruise itineraries No amount of scouse griping can change the geography. But doubtless the scousers on this board will try ;) Regards to all, John Bull (a simple curtsey will suffice :))

I do not find it convenient at all to have to travel to the most southerly part of the country to leave this land. International travellers may find it perfectly convenient to fly via, say, Manchester, yes we do have airports up here and no, the runways are not cobbled. For some obscure reason some flights even arrive from abroad, even transatlantic. There are lots of reasons to visit this part of the country I am surprised that the likes of Peel Holdings haven't seized the opportunity to develop the cruise industry in the Port of Liverpool. It would fit in very well with their activities in the area. The only down side to Liverpool is the geographical location meaning that it takes longer to sail down to the warmer locations such as the Med It's about time we got a bit more choice up here instead of having to fall in with everything being centred on the south east.
