I think that the issue here is based on perception.

 

Although the ship is required to go through (and submit paperwork) for both Customs AND Immigration at THE FIRST US PORT (which would be LA), most passengers perceive that the customs process takes place when the luggage is claimed (which would be in SF).

 

There will still be customs officials on Duty in San Francisco, and they will observe the luggage claim process and collect any fees that are due, but as far as the Government is concerned the ship is clear after LA.

 

So, if we dock in Astoria, Oregon on our SF roundtrip August 26th Alaska Cruise that is where we go thru customs and not SF?? And we can just walk off the ship? thanks Arlene:rolleyes:

Then where did you clear immigration?

 

I think we they cleared the ship in both ports but they are more interested in the stuff you bring back!!!;)

As I said we had to report to the Customs Officials in SD in the lounge before anyone got off the ship.

Yes, Astoria Oregon is an official "Port of Entry" for the United States.

You will fill out and submit (to the front desk) your Customs forms on the night before you arrive in Astoria.

 

Passengers generally assemble in the lounges, segregated by Passport nationality, and after those who require "specialized handling" are processed, the ship is "released".

 

After that, everyone may come and go as they please. :D
