What to do when your in port for a short time?

We are in port 7:00am-1:00pm but really have to be on the ship by 12:00pm or so. What is there to do so early in the morning?

Any suggestions would be great,

I was there a couple of weeks ago..... I walked into town. It's about 15 minutes or so. I walked past the old fort (still an active Naval base), and then down past the ferry docks.... A block or 2 inland from there leads to a shopping district, which by 9am was hopping.

 

I just window shopped, then made my way back... I was impressed by the diverse architecture; from Art Deco buildings, to a building from a Paris exposition in 18?? that was brought to Martinique brick by brick.

 

If you can read French, there was a small, but interesting museum about the local culture on Boulevard General de Gaulle.

 

There were people handing out street maps at the pier.

Thank you for the information. One question if you know this. What do you think about taking the ferry over to Pointe du Bout? We like the beach and thought maybe a few hours there would be fun. Don't know if the ferry leaves that early.

golferwoman, that's a splendid idea. The ferry is fun, and pont de bout is quite nice. I think the ferry starts very early, like 6:30 AM. It's used by commuters to Fort de France.

Just back from our cruise and we ended up just walking the town and shopping. Our ship was only in port for a short time so we had little time to go to the beach.

I was in Martinique 13 years ago and walked around town. The one store I went into for gifts had reasonably priced items. I found a beautiful beach towel for myself and gifts for friends. The people in the store were very friendly.

 

One thing I learned years ago was not to go anywhere alone. While I was not uncomfortable on my own, I normally don't go alone. I didn't have anyone with me and didn't want to stay on the ship.

Does anyone know anything about swimming on the beach right near the port?

We will be in Fort-de-France on a Monday, from 7AM to 1PM.

 

1. Is there an ATM near the pier?

2. What time do the stores / markets open?

3. What time do the ferries start running to Pointe du Bout?
