Mount Vesuvius

We go on our western Europe cruise this year, and are wanting to visit Mount Vesuvius whilst in the Naples one day. Does anyone know how to go about this?

what do you want to do related to Mt. Vesuvius? If you google "mt vesuvius tours", several things pop up in the search results. Are you wanting to climb to the top of the mountain? view the ruins at Pompeii and/or Herculaneum? both?

We want to climb mount vesuvius and ? visit pompeii but want to do it by ourselves if possible so we can spend time climbing and taking in the views...

You can do both on your own. To get to Vesuvius, take the Circumvesuviana railroad from Naples to Ercolano Scavi. There is a bus that leaves from the piazza in front of the train station to Vesuvius. You can return to the train station and go to Pompeii Scavi on the same line, or go to Pompeii first and hit Vesuvius on the way back.
