Delwine Posted February 26, 2011 #1 Share Posted February 26, 2011 Has anyone ever experienced a surcharge on cruise fare due to increased fuel costs? We're sailing Regatta out of the San Francisco in September 2011, and gas is inching up to $4 per gallon here in SF. The trouble in the Middle East in general and embattled Lybia are certainly going to affect a huge change in fuel costs here. Don't know what we can do about it, but just wondering. Mura Posted February 26, 2011 #2 Share Posted February 26, 2011 They did levy them for a while some years ago ... if gas prices continue as they are, I wouldn't be surprised to see them again. However, they DID do away with them ... maybe they found the surcharges were counterproductive. Let's hope so!
Delwine Posted February 26, 2011 Author #3 Share Posted February 26, 2011 Of course, the airlines have their baggage charges now, and they're making a fortune on those. Thank you, Mura. Sounds like we can't rule out charges from the cruise lines.
Mura Posted February 26, 2011 #4 Share Posted February 26, 2011 Let me add that Oceania wasn't the only cruiseline to levy these surcharges. I think just about everybody did. Maybe the premium lines overlooked them, I don't recall. But at least they didn't stay on the way the airlines' baggage charges have!
pacheco18 Posted February 27, 2011 #5 Share Posted February 27, 2011 I have a Celebrity cruise scheduled in August and the possibility of a fuel surcharge is clearly stated in my contract. Of course, they can choose not to impose. But that cruise is booked solid -- I suspect they might.
wripro Posted February 27, 2011 #6 Share Posted February 27, 2011 If they impose fuel surcharges I don't think it will be on a cruise by cruise basis, but rather fleet wide. Whether a cruise is sold out or not shouldn't have any bearing.
Mura Posted February 27, 2011 #7 Share Posted February 27, 2011 Wripo, that's the way I remember these surcharges in the past. Everybody paid them. It doesn't really matter to the cruise line how many people are on a cruise ... they still have to fill the ship with fuel.
