Transfers in San Juan

Hi, We are sailing out of San Juan next month but our agent has us traveling independently. Can anyone advise on the best transfers?

Our pre cruise hotel recommends the taxi service from the airport but we are concerned about the availability of transport to the airport on disembarkation. Thanks

Taxis are plentiful. But once you are on board, you can also book the Celebrity transfers if you wish and your flight departure time is within their parameters. If you have a long wait in San Juan, there are also some post-cruise sightseeing tours you can book which will drop you at the airport. But don't worry about the availability of taxis -- you'll find that there are many of them.

The price for a taxi between the airport and the cruise port is about 20$. It is all preset by the government, I was just there and the exact price escapes me, for some reason I think we paid 23$ for 6 of us and about 5 suitcases, they charge 1$ per suitcase. Most transfers are about 15$ pp each way. Finding a taxi is NEVER a problem in San Juan. :D

Taxi is definitely the way to go. If you book a transfer it will likely be on a bus, and you will likely have to wait until the bus is full before it will depart for your destination. A little tip for by-passing the taxi line, if there is one: get a porter - they work for tips only, and get to bypass the line, so you and your party will get the next taxi available. Last time we cruised out of SJ in 2010 we gave the porter $5 for 4 bags. He was thrilled, and we didn't have to line up for a taxi!

We just returned from San Juan last Friday. When we arrived at the San Juan airport (this was on Sunday the 13th and there were 5 ships in port) we noticed a very long line to get a taxi. We signaled a porter, he retrived our bags from the turnstile and took us directly to a taxi bypassing the long line. We tipped $1 per bag and it was worth it not to wait and deal with the luggage. The taxi cost was $19 plus $1 per bag to OSJ.

Upon disembarking we got to customs and got a porter who found our bags and took us directly to a taxi bypassing the line again at the pier. We took a taxi into OSJ and paid $19 plus $1 per bag again. When leaving OSJ we took a taxi to the airport and paid $19 plus $1 per bag.

Taxis are everywhere. Ask the price before getting in.
