Mobile officials to ask CCL 'why are you leaving'

If Mobile is unable to replace the Elation by the time it’s scheduled to pull out of Mobile in October, the city could find itself with a $2.25 million budget hole, a combination of lost parking revenue and ongoing debt service on the Alabama Cruise Terminal.

In all, the city still owes $25.9 million for the terminal, including interest payments over the life of the bonds.

The real title of that article should be Mobile Mayor Kicks Off Re-election Campaign in Miami

Not a snowballs chance in hell of re-election. He was okay as a county commissioner, but has let the city go to hell in hand basket under his watch.

From the link in the Original Post, I find this quote telling...

"the company said it was moving the Elation cruise ship to New Orleans because it wanted to rotate a ship out of the Gulf of Mexico"

It sounds like Carnival wants to reduce the overall ship count in the Gulf by one ship. Makes more sense to have 2 ships out of New Orleans than one ship out of New Orleans and one ship out of Mobile. Not sure how many ships are actually currently out of New Orleans vs what will happen in the fall, but my gist is that they are consolidating operations.

That's exactly what they wanted to do. It has nothing to do with fuel cost and pricing. They simply wanted to move a ship. Can't blame them if it works for them. The fuel and pricing is just a smoke screen. They should've just said in the beginning that they wanted to move a ship out of the Gulf and Mobile is the big loser. So sorry.

Yeah, sure. They could make a lot more money in Mobile, but they just like the way the pictures come out with NOLA in the background.

No, they can't make more money in Mobile. That's why they are moving the ship. Get a clue.

We were just onboard the Elation last week. Some of the workers said it had to do with the casinos too? In New Orleans they can leave the casino open but not in Mobile? Don't know accurate this is?

Not accurate. They can't open the casino until they get into international waters. So it wouldn't matter for either port.

You're right. We need one so we can tell when you're not being sarcastic. Are you sure you're not my mom posting incognito?

This is your mom speaking ... and even I got it. That was sarcasm about the picture especially.

I think most of us can agree, fewer ships out of the gulf means higher prices overall, stronger demand.

I don't consider saving 600 nautical miles in fuel a smoke screen.

Especially when it takes one gallon of fuel to move the Ecstasy 60 feet.

This is the savings that will occur when the Ecstasy is moved from Galveston to PC.

Since Carnival had already contracted to bring another ship to New Orleans, it makes sense to move one that is not meeting the revenue marks AND is not under contract.

This had more to do with the new 2012 Governmental Fuel Regulations than anything else.

Btw, from the actions of the Mobile "leadership"...Mobile was a loser WAY before Carnival got involved with them.

Mobile lost $2 million in mismanagment of the parking revenue alone.

Mobile made so many business errors on their part....what my uncle (who lives there) calls Mobile's "voo doo" financial accounting....

Hi mom!!!! I've always wanted to tell you that talking to you has been like dancing in a mine field for the last 49 years. On the bright side I've learned the art of "duck and cover", cya and never give up more info than a situation requires. Oh, yeah, and never care what ANYONE says because they've got nothing on you on the blind side attack. Wow!!! I feel better now!! :)

If you've ever wanted a peek at a cruise line contract with a port, there is a copy of Carnival's contract with Mobile in this article. There is also a copy of Jax contract as well. Incidentally, Mobile's contract expired in Nov. 2010 and evidently was not renewed. Oops!!
