Radisson hotel in San Juan

We are sailing out of San Juan in September with RCCL. We are looking for a pre-cruise hotel and we found the Radisson to be the most reasonably priced with the option to get an ambassador room with complimentary breakfast for a very decent price. Just wondering if anyone had stayed here before and could share their experience at the Radisson. Also, if anyone has done the ambassador pkg and if so if it was worth the extra money?

We stayed one night and the package was great.....ample breakfast/snacks-sandwiches and honor bar in the afternoon/great area-lots of restaurants close/room was clean on the 8th floor concierge level/roof pool was nice/close to beaches as the Mariott is two blocks away/bus to OSJ right outside......Marty

Okay -so I have a reservation in acouple of weeks at the Radisson and I called and paid the difference for the ambassador club room--I figure the price for breakfast and snacks, it was worth the difference in the price. I am taking your recommandation of this--thanks!

There are tons of restaurants in the area around the hotel. Danny's is very close and they serve all types of foods at very reasonable prices including typical American breakfasts.....Starbucks is close and Dunkin Donuts is also not far.......Don't know how much the upgrade cost you......if it was not too much it should be worth it. The Marriott and La Concha are more "resort" type hotels. The Radisson is certainly good pre cruise for a night or two.....

We are staying there just for one night and it was not that much more then we paid---I figure this way we can relax in the morning until we leave for the cruise and having the continental breakfast right there and coffee was worth it

The room I was looking at costs $30 more if you do the Ambassador upgrade. Is it worth that? What do they mean by Honor Bar included?

I just reserved two ambassador rooms today. Both for a base rate of 144 a night. The regular deluxe guest room was going for a base rate of 130 a night. With taxes and fees the ambassador cost us 17.00 more than the the regular deluxe guest room. To me this is worth the extra money just for the convenience as well as for the breakfast and snacks! It is my understanding that an honor bar is a bar where you pay for the drinks. On "your honor" you tell them what you drank. However, there are a few hotels out there where the drinks are free at a honor bar, this can be rare though.

The breakfast area is on the top level with an exit leading to the roof pool. The pool is really nice for a few hours of relaxation. There is also a health club off the pool area. The breakfast area is small....Breakfast was fine with lots of choices. In the afternoon there were sandwiches, cheese, veggies/dip and several other items. You could make your own drinks at the honor bar and leave a slip with your room number. Out of the hotel to the left is Danny's restaurant, Starbucks, Walgreens.......to the right (the direction of Old San Juan) are lots of restaurants and other hotels. You can catch the bus to OSJ right outside the hotel......Marty

Is there a store near the Radisson that sells Wine? Esp the larger 1.5l bottles of Chardonnay?

You can get some wine in Walgreens or at a small market near the Radisson. For a larger variety we walked to the Super Max supermarket on De Diego about a 15 minute walk.....prices were about 25% higher than we would have paid at home.

Turn right and walk about two blocks. Orozco's is at 1126 Ashford (other side of the street)......inexpensive, good local cuisine.....not fancy...

 

Another choice is Ropa Vieja.......about a 20-25 minute walk to the right...past Marriott and past La Concha Hotel....more $$$ but excellent!

 

Loads of restaurants within walking distance.

We just got back from staying one night before our cruise at the radisson and we did the upgrade package----if you are a coffee drinker then you are going to be disappointed because they don't serve regular coffee in there--only expresso and other strong coffee's- I personally love coffee in the morning-so I had to go to the restuarant and buy a cup of coffee

We have just stayed at the Radisson pre cruise and found it worth the visit for a night. I asked for a quiet room high up near the elevator. They put us up on the Ambassador level and for $108.00 plus fees. We walked up the side street to the little beach at the end of the street and it was nice to stroll the beach after 185+ inches of snow here in the CNY area.

As to the question no one really could answer - there is a pretty nice selection of wine in the next block (toward the Marriott) about two doors down from the Radisson called the Eros store. They had the large bottles (1.5l) of many wines and a huge selection of other liquor and wines as well as other sundries. Just what I was looking for. The Walgreens is in the opposite direction in the block preceding the Radisson (coming from the airport) had a very small selection of 750l bottles maybe 10 bottles in all. We ate in the Radisson grill as our energy level started to go down as night fell. That plane ride and transfers really did us in. The grill food was good though and I tried the fried plantains they had there. I wanted to try mofongo but it was a big meal not as an appetizer and and I didn't want to venture into territory that might cause me to not enjoy the upcoming cruise. (Celebrity food is great however ).

Based on everyone's recommendations, we decided to upgrade to the Ambassador level as it was only a $20 upcharge. I read some complaints about noise on weekends and noise from the casino and nightclub. What floor are the Ambassador Club rooms on and are the rooms situated suffciently high enough to dampen the noise?

Club rooms were on the 8th floor and noise was not an issue...one flight up was the breakfast room....rooftop pool....gym......Orozco's serves mofongo and other local dishes.....if you want a little more upscale try Ropa Vieja about a 20 minute walk. Also, keep checking prices on the Radisson....they often get lower closer to your check in date.......Marty

We got a rate of $136 (including taxes) for the Ambassador Club level but will keep checking since our cruise is in late October. 8th floor sounds good to me. DH is a light sleeper so noise is an issue for us.

 

Orozco's sounds like our kind of place. We usually go to Metropol when in PR but it would require a taxi ride from the Radisson and we wanted to try someplace different.

was very quiet when we were there in April. Orozco's was highly recommended by the bellman but we just were ready to eat at the grill and call it a night. While we were given a room at the ambassador level we did not have the perks. Our room started at over $200.00 but due to a promotion we got it for $150.00 and then I kept watching the rates on the Radisson site and when the rate was posted at $108.00 I jumped on the Radisson site toll free number and got the same exact room for the $108 price. I think with the taxes and fees it came to $136.00 Pretty nice room and close to many restaurants. the Marriott is just down the street and looks pretty nice but the rates don't seem to change much.

I just checked the menu for Orozco's and we will probably have to dine there at least twice to try out all the meals I like - mofongo con mariscos, fried pork chops, churrasco, bistec and tres leches cake.

 

GeneD - looks like we got the same rate you did though I will keep checking the rates until our departure. The regular room was $91 plus $25 in taxes. The Marriott is shwoing a rate of $159 plus tax. As we are in PR for just one night, the Radisson should be fine for our needs. Thanks.
