Going RCI because of single supplement

I am planning a weekend getaway cruise in Sept just because. I was going to take advantage of the much discussed casino deal, but with the 100% supplement it isn't really worth it, so I am going to head out on the Majesty of the Seas instead because they are only charging a 50% supplement (compared to Carnival's 100%) supplement.

Even NCL is charging 50% supplement on similar cruises (too bad I dont like them very much).

I wish Carnival would at a minimum give solos a break in the 1A's again.

When enough people stop paying the 100% supplement, they will.

Good move on your part to not let a cruise line gouge you with an unfair penalty for cruising solo.

Enjoy, some gamblers like RCL better for gambling, so enjoy the casino. The 5 day majesty has 3 ports, including a nice beach day.

Ill be booking again on Carnival more when they come back with the 50% supplement too.

Good to know that about the casino. As long as lady luck is keeping me basically even, I spend a considerable amount of time in the casino. And when lady luck is not being kind to me then I end up spending time in the ...casino

If you want low supplements, look at royal's sister Celebrity. they have really good deals on their Tuesday specials, sometimes single suppl. is 125%. they also have awesome military discounts. EM

Anything above a 1A paid double anyway and there aren't that many 1As.

On 1As, I blame home schooling. :p People now bring their kids on cruises when they should be in school.

I have yet to find a casino at sea on any cruise line that had decent video poker payouts.

NCL Epic does have single cabins - insides as I understand and about the size of a closet. :p

Yup, RCCL has my business when I do solos now. I just got off Navigator last week for a decent price. My Majesty solo last December was an incredibly cheap price. The Carnival 1A isn't even a consideration anymore. Especially when I can get a balcony for less then 200% on Royal.

And on a lot of the Costa cruises, there is NO single supplement! Having said that, if you call Costa, the rep will tell you how much the single supplement is, but if you book the same cruise online, you will not pay the single supplement!!

Ok, I just checked a RCCL cruise or two and there was no price break for singles. I suppose if you don't care where you sail from, where you go, or a specific date, or yada, yada.

It ain't the deal some are portraying it to be. At least not that I saw.

What deal are you talking about? They are charging me 150% of the cruise price. While it is not the 200% that Carnival charges, it is not exactly a price break. I started off looking at Carnival because of the casino deal, but it cost more than RCI.

Maybe some just know how to navigate RCCL's. Maybe they will be kind enough to give you and the rest of us a lesson....;)

 I blame all the people who booked the 1A's with two people in them!! There is one of them that always complains about the price now that did that in the past, but now has to book single!!!

Hi KK ... I am sure thats me being talked about.

So, I control Carnival's pricing ... its all on my shoulders. Good to know I have so much power.

I'm not interested at all in what the single supplement percentage is. Doesn't matter if it's 125%, 150% or 200%. The only thing I look at is the price I'm going to pay. How it's computed doesn't matter to me. So when I price future cruises, I go all the way through the online booking process to find out my real price before I make my choice.

I picked a cruise at random:

Inside:

$1,079 - $1,339 USD for one

For two:

from $519 ?

then from $599

then from $619 - $749 (each, for two) - 150 square feet cabin - ouch

---------------

balcony

$899 - $1059pp for two

$1,639 - $1,959 USD for one

They are certainly charging more than 150%. Perhaps you can find 150% on some sailings, but not all.

Iv also seen 0% on RCL cruises for solo supplements... I dont think the poster meant you can pick one at random and they are all 150%, some are higher and some are lower. The tuesday specials usually run about 170%.

I think most are looking at what is the bottom line.

To KK who said its my fault for booking 1As for 2 people ...I only booked them on Conquest, never a bunk bed cabin. Im not big on upper bunks!!! Now that Im solo I would book them too.

Here is a summer cruise picked at random ...as you can see the supplement also changes depending on which category you book. People just wish Carnival had this as a option, thats all they are saying.

3 nights departing August 12, 2011 on

Royal Caribbean's Monarch of the Seas

Double Occupancy Inside $219

Single Occupancy Inside $310

Single Supplement 42%

Double Occupancy Oceanview $249

Single Occupancy Oceanview $361

Single Supplement 45%

Double Occupancy Balcony $679

Single Occupancy Balcony $1,269

Single Supplement 87%

Double Occupancy Suite $679

Single Occupancy Suite $1,269

Single Supplement 87%

With that power comes much responsibility. Use it wisely my friend.

I did not claim that all RCI sailings are 150%. It varies by the cruise. I don't believe Carnival ever discounts the single supplement anymore. I was looking specifically at weekend getaway cruises in Sept. which had me comparing Carnival, RCI, and NCL. Prices were similar for all 3 with RCI and NCL charging about 150% and Carnival charging 200%.

I know for a fact (one of their brass specifically told me) that RCI will try to work with agents in reducing the supplement too - particularly when an agent tells RCI that a customer is going to book a similar itinerary on a different line. Carnival will not do this.

I am sure that on more popular sailings, the supplement will be the normal 200% on every line.

You're exactly right. I'm looking into a solo cruise this October. I have a very specific date I can sail. When looking at what's available between Carnival, RCI and NCL, Carnival is priced MUCH better than the other two (even if their overall solo supplement is higher).

There may be deals here and there but I've been looking at a lot of different cruises on the various lines and I don't see how RCI or NCL is priced any better whatsoever. Believe me, I wish they were but I'm just not seeing that that's the case.

My approach is the same - I look at the overall cost and what I'm willing to pay for my vacation. Without the 1A cabin "deal" of the past, most cruises for solos are similarly priced so there is less incentive to be loyal to Carnival. I chose to go with Celebrity for my upcoming Alaska cruise because it was actually less $$ than Carnival for the same week and I get to cruise out of my home port of Vancouver.

Unfortunately I think Carnival is/will be losing business from solos who were loyal in the past but are seeing now that there are other options. I think it's a shame.

I think it is obvious that Carnival doesn't discount because they don't have to. the others do. If people want to book on single supplement percentage alone, that is their prerogative. I looked a a ship I was willing to travel on, embarking from a city I was willing to embark from and didn't see much, if any, difference in the single supplement percentage.
