havepassportwilltravel Posted May 9, 2011 #1 Share Posted May 9, 2011 On Friday, May 6, the captain and crew of the Equinox diverted course to assist in an international rescue of five German sailors in a 40+ foot disabled sailboat, almost 900 miles from Bermuda. For those of us who were passengers on board, it was quite an adventure...best seen from the safety of our very large vessel in heavy, stormy seas rather than in the very small boat yawing in huge swells. The captain and crew did an exceptional job of bringing aid. They are to be congratulated and commended. It is good to know that nations can work together for assistance on the oceans of the world. suzzek Posted May 9, 2011 #3 Share Posted May 9, 2011 Thank you for posting this great message...I have been thinking about all of you aboard the Equinox (especially my mother, today, Mother's Day) and have been so curious about the rescue at sea that we boarders learned about a few days ago. I hope you , collectively, will continue to post on this site to keep us abreast of your activities and wonderful days abroad!:D
oceanluvr19 Posted May 19, 2011 #4 Share Posted May 19, 2011 We were also on board. Everyone was anxious for the sailors on the Cat and were pleased and proud our ship could help. This was a real-life example of how Safety on the seas is the first priority and cooperation between ships is alive and well.
smellywax Posted May 19, 2011 #5 Share Posted May 19, 2011 I was on board as well but was a little nervous in light of the recent events. All I could think of was the USS Cole attack and I was just praying they knew exactly who was on board.
mkayreagan Posted May 21, 2011 #6 Share Posted May 21, 2011 I was onboard too and filmed it from my 9th deck veranda, aft. It was even more scary when reviewing the video at home. So glad to know they are safe. Here's a link to the video on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebA81ljL8cg.
ncgolferette Posted May 21, 2011 #7 Share Posted May 21, 2011 DH and I were on the 2.28.11 sailing of the Equinox and the second day we were off the coast of Cuba. The bridge spotted a raft floating in the water and our ship made a large U turn and sent a crew out to inspect the raft. Noone was on the raft but it goes to show how the bridge officers keep a vigilant eye - they are to be commended for the job they do!!!!
