Shore excursions Dubrovnik etc

Does anyone have experience of docking at Dubrovnik, Split, Cephalonia or Palermo? Not keen on shore excursions unless we have to and wonder if we will be docking where we can do our own wandering around at these ports?

Only visited Dubrovnik - you can get a bus into the main area just outside the port. For the equivilant of about £1. Cheaper than the 10 euro each way taxi

We had a tender from the ship in, then it was beautiful, you can walk around the city, which is very pretty, but make sure you walk the wall, this was wonderful, you can use sterling to pay to do it, it was £10. You can see all the sights from this vantage point. There is no point in doing any excursions, it was lovely on our own just to wander.:)

We did both just over a month ago, don't miss the old town at Dubrovnik it really is worth doing as is the city walls while you are there but you do need to be able to walk well as there are many steps around the walls.

 

Split is less spectacular but we got an open bus from the quay after tendering in which did a 45 minute tour of the city followed by a walking tour around the Palace and the old town, our guide in Split spoke perfect English, was very knowledgable and for about £15 each it was well worth doing

I did a tour at Dubrovnik called 'Dubrovnik by land and sea' The coach took us from the ships berth to the Marina where we got on a schooner for a sail around the coastline into the harbour in town, wonderful. Then a hours walking tour showing us the towns highlights, then a hours free time for shopping etc. You could either then go back to the ship, or stay on in the town for lunch and more exploring which we did, taking the free shuttle back to the ship.

We were tendered straight into Dubrovnik harbour last year on Azura. From there you are already in the old town and could walk around to your hearts content. Lovely place, quite small and a few hours will cover it including the walls and a break for coffee. There appeared to be a chairlift up the mountain behind the town which must offer great views but it didnt seem to be working when we were there.

In Cephalonia you really need to take an excursion if you want to see anything. The ship tenders you in to Argostoli, the capital, which is a bit of a dump, also the tenders drop you quite a long way from the centre. It is a beautiful island, but you will only get a feel for it if you take a tour.

Thats very true! Absolutely nothing there except a couple of cafes! We regretted not doing a trip. Did the Dubrovnic Land and Sea one but sea very rough(very scary!) we couldnt do all of it as it wasnt safe. I'm sure its fine if all is calm but we had quite rough weather that year(bout 4yrs ago) If ship docks near town you can wander around it yourself, especially if you buy a guidebook. Split is lovely and very interesting and again once tendered in, easy to do by yourself with a guidebook.

You will see photos from my P&O trip while at Cephalonia, it was magical with a stop at Fiskarado for coffee and cakes, the cave lake etc...also the Dubrovnik land and sea tour, we had gret weather.

 

The Cephalonia trip had us back around 2pm we had a greek lunch by the harbourside before getting onboard a great day.
