Re: Chair hog threads - Is it just me?

On all the threads I've read on Cruise Critic, the one that everyone agrees on is the evil Chair Hogs. Is it just me, or have you never seen anyone post that they are part of that vile clan? Everyone is ready to condemn their actions (myself included), but yet, no one will smugly say they wake up at 5am just to grab some towels to save a chair or five.

I find it hard to believe that on one of the largest and most popular cruise travel planning boards that not a single Hog is in the mix. Hmmmmm.....!!!! ;)

I've seen them post. But you are correct that it is rare.

For the record, not everyone thinks this is the biggest problem facing the cruise industry. But the ones who do post a lot.

I have never chaired a hog or boozed smuggle.

Just kidding.

But, you are right. People seem to be a lot more willing to say they are a booze smuggler, but no one wants to claim the "chair hog" title.

Just back from a cruise on the Gem and NO I am NOT a morning "hogger" but .... once I have found a spot at whatever time I feel like it, this spot is mine for the day even if I leave for lunch for 1 hour.

But when I think I am done for the day I don't save it "in case", I take my towel and go.

Agreed. I've noticed those evil, vile vermin (or at least their towels and outdated, waterlogged copy of Vogue & Men's Health) but not all the time. It's more a nuisance as far as I can tell.

I agree. It's one of the least things I'm concerned with. Also, I've never had that problem on a cruise. There seem to be someone always leaving. Even on a mega ship like Epic, every time we decided to go to the pool in the middle of the day, we managed to get front row seats.

Ah ha! An elusive and wiley chair hog! Sorta...

It's my opinion that if you leave your chair for an hour and hope it will still be empty when you get back, you are not a chair hog. But if you leave it for an hour and expect it to still be free when you return--regarding it as still "yours"--you are a chair hog.

I agree with the OP.

There are so many threads on the subject I have stopped reading them altogether. They are all the same. I guess if you know enough to read Cruise Critic, you probably know to not hog a chair???

Fortunately, we have never understood the great desire to sit so close to the pool anyway. It's too loud, too wet, and too crawling with screaming kids! Also, knowing folks with skin cancer, the last place I could ever spend all day is lying in the sun, but to each his/her own.

The more people crowding the pool area, the more open seats for us in other parts of the ship! :D

While they are all fighting over who is sitting as close as they can to the pool, they are not occupying seats at the bar, and that suits me.

Maybe I'm a bar chair hog.......

:D Good attitude!

My dear sweet mother told me of her resort vacation with some family a few years ago. She explained to me how the group would send a member down to the pool every morning to stake claim on some chairs with various items ...

I didn't have the heart to tell her it was not cool. Needless to say, if she and I ever get the opportunity to cruise, I will tell her.

Thankfully it is not genetic:o

I don't get up before 8AM to go to work, I'm certainly not getting up at 5AM to put a towel on a chair that may or may not be there when I get back.

I'm on vacation, and getting up at 5AM for ANYTHING is sooooo NOT a priority.

Hi my name is Jo Anne and I am not a chair hog. I can't get my butt out of bed early enough to be one! Then again I think if someone is up that early and sits in their chair all day they are not a chair hog, they are chair user. First come first serve. I think the people that save chairs until they are ready to use them are the hogs. That does burn my butt. In my world it's move your feet lose your seat. I don't let it ruin my good time though I just find a chair somewhere else and enjoy my time is the sun. Happy cruising everyone!

I agree with you to a point. If I am there with someone I feel it is ok to have them watch my chair if I need to go to the restroom, make a dash through the outside grill line or take a 3 minute dip in the pool just to cool off. What's the point of sitting by the pool if you can't use it once in a while.

If I was alone I would have hopefully made acquaintance with someone next to me and I would have no qualms about asking them to watch my chair for 10 minutes (and why).

I don't think anyone would think of this as a chair hog. We're talking an hour or more at a time, pretty much.

What you are describing as feeling OK about is perfectly OK and within the guidelines of NCL's unenforced policy. You are using a sun chair, not reserving it.

The sign hidden somewhere on the deck states "dear guest-no reserving of sun chairs. Please do not reserve sun chairs at any time, items left unattended for more than 30 minutes will be subject to confiscation. Shipboard management"

For those who get up at 5am to occupy a chair, that's considered fair-use in my book. But if your butt is not occupying the chair, but rather a single shoe or bedraggled magazine--and it occupies it for more than 60 minutes--then that's chair hogging. A family member sitting and "holding" several more adjacent chairs doesn't actually bother me either, since it's important for related people (especially those with kids) to be close to each other for everyone's safety and sanity. But don't snag a chair at dawn, plop down the book and then head off to breakfast, shopping, the spa and the casino and then return to "read" your book mid-day. This isn't just confined to ships, I've seen plenty of it at beach resorts.
