ljslight Posted June 28, 2011 #1 Share Posted June 28, 2011 At least 40 cab drivers say they are now restricted from picking up passengers at Port Canaveral, according to WFTV Channel 9. In May, the Port Authority signed an exclusive contract with Triple 8 Taxi, which means that company's drivers are the only ones able to serve customers at the port. Read more at WFTV.com. psucruiser11 Posted June 28, 2011 #2 Share Posted June 28, 2011 Legally, it's only a monopoly if there is some negative effect to the consumer. As taxis and taxi fares are heavily regulated by state and local governments, this should have no negative effect on the consumer. That is to say, there will be no difference in price or service. The cruise terminal is probably given a cut of the taxi profits from the cruiseport, and the taxi company is guaranteed business. This probably isn't the best for other taxi drivers, but it's not really a monopoly.

firefly333 Posted June 28, 2011 #4 Share Posted June 28, 2011 New Orleans wouldnt allow hotel shuttle drivers to pick you up at the port, you have to grab a cab. .. though they are allowed to drop you off. Our shuttle drivers used to pick up on the main road, Riverside? at the light, but our driver said the taxi's caught them and turned them in and they had to quit. Now they can only drop off at certain places and pick you up at designated places in the qtr. Getting worse.
