me too! we are doing excursions at 2 other ports on our next cruise. we rather not pay to do one in st kitts, but if we could rent some equiptment at a beach and do it ourselves, we would be cool with that. that an option anywhere?

We have snorkeled at both Cockleshell and South Friars. Cockleshell, despite having a pretty good reputation, was terribly disappointing. When we were there the beach was dirty, the rental chairs very shabby and the snorkeling was not great. You snorkel right off the beach by going out along the left side of the beach along the coast line. There is a lot of shallow areas with too much sea grass and a little coral. If you go out very far to the end of the coast line the current can be nasty (most beginners would not go this far). A few weeks after we were in Cockleshell we were back on the island and decided to go over to South Friars Beach (Shipwreck Bar) and enjoyed this much better then Cockelshell. The beach was cleaner and Shipwreck Bar is a decent barefoot bar/cafe with drinks, food and rest rooms. The snorkeling here was OK (not great) but we saw more sealife (and some coral) then at Cockelshell.
